Overview
Nagoya Station is Nagoya’s main rail gateway and one of central Japan’s key transport hubs. It is especially useful for travelers using the Tokaido Shinkansen, connecting to Central Japan International Airport by Meitetsu, or choosing a hotel base where rail access matters more than nightlife.
Lines and connections
JR Central serves Nagoya Station with the Tokaido Shinkansen and conventional rail lines. The wider station complex also connects to subway services, local and highway buses, and the nearby Meitetsu Nagoya and Kintetsu Nagoya stations through surrounding buildings and underground concourses.
For visitors, the operator matters. Shinkansen services are run by JR Central, airport trains use Meitetsu Nagoya, Kintetsu routes depart from Kintetsu Nagoya, and movement around the city often involves the subway or buses.
Airport access
Access to Central Japan International Airport is mainly by Meitetsu rail through Meitetsu Nagoya Station. Meitetsu’s airport guidance lists the fastest airport limited express journey between Central Japan International Airport Station and the Nagoya side at about 28 minutes.
Station area
Nagoya Station anchors the Nagoya Station Area, a busy district of large commercial buildings, underground shopping, hotels, offices, restaurants, buses, taxis, and nearby sightseeing or museum stops. It is one of the simplest places to stay when luggage, train timing, or airport transfers are a priority.
Good to know
Nagoya Station is a large station complex, not a single straightforward platform building. Allow extra time for transfers between JR, Meitetsu, Kintetsu, subway, bus, and hotel exits, especially if you are carrying luggage or connecting to the airport.
