Overview
Nara Park begins close to the station. Kintetsu Nara Station is central Nara's park-side rail terminus and anchors the Kintetsu Nara Station Area. From the exits, the main sightseeing route leads east along Noborioji toward Kofukuji, Nara Park, and the museum district.
For visitors arriving by Kintetsu, this is the shortest rail approach to the park side of the city. JR Nara Station is farther west and serves a different network, so your best arrival point depends on both the train you take and where you want to begin sightseeing.
Lines and connections
The Kintetsu Nara Line ends here at station A28. Direct trains run from Osaka-Namba, while journeys from Kyoto may be direct or require a transfer at Yamato-Saidaiji, depending on the service. Either route brings you to the side of central Nara where many park-focused visits begin.
Kintetsu Nara and JR Nara aren't adjoining parts of a single station. If you're using a JR pass, continuing on JR lines, or meeting someone on the JR side, confirm the station name before traveling.
Airport access
Airport buses require a little planning. Nara Kotsu lists Kintetsu Nara on its Kansai Airport route, but the current timetable offers limited, direction-dependent service at this stop. Check your specific departure rather than assuming every KIX bus calls here.
The Itami Airport route serves JR Nara instead of Kintetsu Nara. If you're traveling with luggage and plan to use an airport bus, compare the two Nara stations before booking a nearby hotel.
Station area
The streets outside lead quickly into central Nara's shops, restaurants, and park-bound walking routes. The Kintetsu Nara Bus Information Center is outside Exit 5, where travelers can ask about local buses and buy sightseeing bus passes. Station coin lockers are handy for day trips before hotel check-in or after check-out.
What's nearby
Nara Park is about five minutes away on foot. Farther east along Noborioji, Nara National Museum is about 15 minutes from the station or can be reached by local bus. Kofukuji also lies along the park-side route, so you don't need to cross central Nara before beginning a first round of sightseeing.
Consider the bus for Todaiji, Kasuga Taisha, and other places deeper within the park area. For Kofukuji and the western edge of Nara Park, walking is usually the simpler start.
Good to know
The choice becomes clear once you know the day's first priority. Kintetsu Nara shortens the walk to the park and suits Kintetsu arrivals from Osaka or Kyoto. JR Nara is the stronger match for JR trains and more consistent airport-bus connections.
