Overview
Between Hama-rikyu Gardens and the lower Sumida River, Tokyo-Takeshiba covers the waterfront around Takeshiba Station. WATERS takeshiba and Tokyo Port City Takeshiba define its redeveloped side, while the passenger ship terminal continues the district's longer-standing role as a departure point for Tokyo's islands.
The waterfront comes first here. The Yurikamome serves the district directly, while a short walk inland leads to Hamamatsucho Station for JR city routes and the Tokyo Monorail to Haneda Airport.
What the area is known for
Passenger boats and waterfront promenades give Takeshiba a different pace from the office streets of nearby Hamamatsucho and Shiodome. Takeshiba Pier serves ferries to the Izu and Ogasawara islands. Local water buses use separate piers for trips across Tokyo Bay and along the Sumida River.
Much of today's district took shape in 2020, when WATERS takeshiba and Tokyo Port City Takeshiba added public terraces, shops, restaurants, entertainment, and open views across the water.
Main places
WATERS takeshiba brings together atre TAKESHIBA, three theatres, a waterfront plaza, and mesm Tokyo, Autograph Collection. Its waterside space faces Hama-rikyu Gardens across the Shiodome River, with a restored tidal flat beside the public promenade.
Farther north, Tokyo Port City Takeshiba uses the gardens and small habitats of its stepped Skip Terrace to bring biodiversity into a modern office and retail complex. Takeshiba Passenger Ship Terminal remains the district's main departure point for Tokyo's islands.
Stations and access
Takeshiba Station is the closest stop to the waterfront. Yurikamome trains run north through Shiodome to Shimbashi and south through Hinode toward Odaiba, Ariake, and Toyosu.
WATERS takeshiba is about six minutes from Hamamatsucho's North Exit and seven minutes from Daimon Station. Hamamatsucho is better for JR trains and Haneda Airport, while Daimon adds the Toei Asakusa and Oedo subway lines.
Where it fits in a trip
Bay views, waterside walks, theatre visits, and boat departures are the main reasons to stay here. Hamamatsucho's nearby monorail also helps before or after a Haneda flight without giving up a central Tokyo location.
The tradeoff is the final walk to the larger rail network. Takeshiba itself has only the Yurikamome, and Shinkansen journeys still require a connection to Tokyo or Shinagawa.
Good to know
Takeshiba Passenger Ship Terminal and the WATERS takeshiba pier are separate facilities serving different routes. Check the operator, pier, and timetable before setting out, especially for island ferries or seasonal water-bus services.
