Why stay here

Overview

On the east bank of the Sumida River, Ryogoku is Tokyo's sumo district. Kokugikan, the city's main sumo arena, is close to the JR station, while museums and a pond garden make the area worth visiting outside tournament season. A museum visit, chanko hotpot lunch, and riverside walk can all fit into one day without another train journey.

What the area is known for

Wrestler statues line Kokugikan-dori, and local restaurants serve chanko, a hotpot of meat, seafood and vegetables eaten by sumo wrestlers. Inside Ryogoku Edo Noren, restaurants surround a full-sized sumo ring in the former station building.

Main places

The Edo-Tokyo Museum explores the city's history through models and full-sized reconstructions. Farther east, the Sumida Hokusai Museum focuses on the artist's life and work.

North of Kokugikan, Former Yasuda Garden has paths around a pond. The Sumida riverside is also nearby, and The Gate Hotel Ryogoku by Hulic faces the water beside the River Center pier. From the hotel, both the arena and riverside are within walking distance.

Stations and access

Ryogoku Station is served by JR Chuo-Sobu local trains and the Toei Oedo Line, but the two sets of entrances are separate. The JR West Exit is near Kokugikan and Edo Noren, while the Oedo Line entrances are farther east and closer to the Edo-Tokyo Museum.

JR trains run directly to Akihabara and Shinjuku. To reach Tokyo Station, change at Akihabara for the Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku Line. The Oedo Line provides a direct ride to Roppongi.

Good to know

Sumo tournaments aren't held every day. Tokyo's main tournaments take place in January, May, and September, and tickets require advance planning. Outside those months, build the day around the museums, garden, and riverside.
