Transport access and hotel guide

Overview

Beside the Sumida River and close to the Kokugikan sumo arena, The Gate Hotel Ryogoku by Hulic is a three-minute walk from JR Ryogoku Station's West Exit.

Rooms

Modest rooms measure 16 square metres and accommodate one guest. Essential rooms range from 24 to 29 square metres, with double, twin and selected three-person layouts. The Essential Hollywood Triple combines two beds with an extra bed, so check the exact category when booking for three.

Views vary by room type. Essential Twins face the Sumida River, while Scenic corner rooms look toward Kokugikan and its Japanese garden. Essential rooms have a bathtub and separate shower. Connecting rooms are available in the Essential and Minimal categories, subject to availability.

Facilities

The ninth-floor Terrace & Lounge is reserved for overnight guests and has views toward Tokyo Skytree. You can use the outdoor terrace from 6am, and the lounge serves cocktails in the evening. Reception can store luggage before check-in and after checkout, letting you explore without your bags.

Dining

Anchor Ryogoku Riverside, on the second floor, serves breakfast from 6:30am to 10am. Choose a main dish such as eggs Benedict, French toast or an open-faced sandwich, then help yourself to bread, salads and other items from the self-service counter.

The river-facing restaurant also serves lunch and dinner, with terrace seating available. There is no room service.

Location and transport

JR Chuo-Sobu local trains run directly to Akihabara and Shinjuku. To reach Tokyo Station and the Shinkansen, change at Akihabara for the Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku Line.

Exit A3 of the Toei Oedo Line is a seven-minute walk from the hotel, farther away than the JR station. The line provides a direct route to Roppongi. Check which service you're using before setting out, as the JR and subway entrances are separate.

Airport access

From Haneda Airport, take a Keikyu train that continues onto the Toei Asakusa Line to Asakusabashi, then change to a JR local train for the one-stop ride to Ryogoku. Some Keisei Access Express services from Narita Airport also continue to Asakusabashi. Check the train's destination, since other departures require an additional change.

Why stay here

After a day at Ryogoku's museums or a sumo tournament, you can have dinner beside the river and a drink in the rooftop lounge. If the view is part of the reason you're booking, select a river-facing room; the hotel's waterfront address doesn't guarantee that outlook from every room.

In Tokyo-Ryogoku, you can walk to Former Yasuda Garden, explore the Edo-Tokyo Museum and try chanko hotpot near the arena. The Sumida Hokusai Museum adds another option for a day in the neighborhood.

Good to know

Check-in starts at 2pm and checkout is at 11am, unless your booking specifies otherwise. The hotel has no parking.

The entrances are locked from 10:30pm to 6am. Returning guests can enter with their room key; contact the hotel beforehand if your first arrival will be after 10:30pm.
