Overview
Tokyo Station is one of the main rail anchors for central Tokyo and the wider country. It is especially useful for visitors using the Shinkansen, Narita Express, JR city lines, or hotels around Tokyo Station and Marunouchi.

Lines and connections
The station handles multiple Shinkansen routes, including Tokaido-Sanyo services and JR East services toward northern and central Japan. JR conventional lines include the Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku, Chuo Rapid, Tokaido, Utsunomiya and Takasaki services, Yokosuka and Sobu Rapid, Keiyo, Musashino, and Narita Express services. Tokyo Metro adds the Marunouchi Line at Tokyo Station.
Station area
The station is divided into several practical zones. The Marunouchi side faces the restored red-brick station building, office towers, hotels, and the direction of the Imperial Palace. The Yaesu side is useful for department-store, underground shopping, bus, and east-side access. The Keiyo Line platforms are farther from the main concourse than many visitors expect.
Airport access
Narita Express trains serve Tokyo Station directly, making it a strong base for Narita Airport rail access. Haneda Airport access usually involves a transfer through another central station or airport rail route, so travelers with luggage should plan the exact path before arrival.
Good to know
Tokyo Station is not a simple single-platform stop. Exit choice matters, and transfers between Shinkansen gates, JR local lines, the Keiyo Line, underground shopping areas, taxis, and the Marunouchi subway can require extra walking time.
