Overview
Naha is the capital of Okinawa Prefecture and the main arrival point for many trips to Okinawa Main Island. Unlike rail-oriented cities on mainland Japan, getting around here depends more on Naha Airport, the Yui Rail monorail, taxis, buses, ferries, and rental cars than on JR lines or Shinkansen connections.
What the city is known for
The best-known visitor area is Naha-Kokusai Dori, a central street for shopping, dining, and nightlife near the prefectural government side of the city. Naha is also a practical base for visiting Shuri, Naminoue, Tomari Port, markets, local food spots, Okinawan craft shops, and city hotels before or after resort stays elsewhere on the island.
Main areas
Kokusai-dori and Kumoji are the easiest central areas for shopping, dining, hotel choice, and Yui Rail access. The Asahibashi side is useful for Naha Bus Terminal and some airport and highway bus routes. Tomari is important for ferries, while Shuri is better suited to travelers focused on castle-area sightseeing rather than late-night dining.
Getting around
Yui Rail connects Naha Airport with central Naha, Shuri, and Urasoe. Kencho-mae Station is one of the most useful stops for Kumoji, Okinawa Prefectural Office, Naha City Hall, Palette Kumoji, and the western end of Kokusai-dori. Outside the monorail corridor, visitors typically use buses, taxis, rental cars, or ferries.
Where to stay
Choose central Naha if airport access, dining, shopping, and ferry or bus connections matter more than beach-resort quiet. Consider other bases on Okinawa Main Island when the trip is centered on beaches, driving routes, aquarium visits, or resort time.
