Planning Your Stay in Kanazawa

Overview

Kenrokuen Garden is located beside the castle that shaped Kanazawa, the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu. The former castle town still has distinct samurai and teahouse quarters, with craft shops and small gardens to explore between the larger sights. A two-day stay leaves time to walk these neighborhoods and stop for a market meal without planning everything around the next train.

Gardens and historic districts

Kenrokuen's ponds and paths change with the seasons, from spring blossoms and autumn leaves to the rope supports that protect its pine branches from winter snow. Across the road, Kanazawa Castle Park has stone walls, historic gates, and reconstructed buildings, although no main castle tower survives. The garden and castle grounds fit naturally into the same outing, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art is a short walk from the garden's Mayumizaka Gate.

The museum is scheduled to close for renovations from May 6, 2027, through March 2028.

Near the Asano River, Higashi Chaya's wooden teahouses recall the city's geisha entertainment district. Some welcome visitors, while others now house cafes or shops. At a gold-leaf workshop, you can try decorating a small object yourself.

Nagamachi was home to the city's samurai. Earthen walls line its narrow lanes, and the Nomura Samurai Residence opens onto a small garden. A walk beside the Onosho Canal fits easily into the same visit. Most houses are still homes, so keep voices low near doorways and along residential lanes.

Food and where to stay

Omicho Market is about a 15-minute walk from the railway station. Fishmongers sell Sea of Japan seafood alongside stalls of local produce, and some restaurants serve sushi or seafood rice bowls for breakfast. A morning visit can help you avoid lunchtime queues, although individual shops keep different hours.

The Kanazawa Station Area has hotels within walking distance of the trains, plus plenty of shops and restaurants around the concourses. Stay here if you're arriving with large bags or leaving early by rail. You'll still need to allow time to reach the castle and historic quarters.

Kanazawa-Korinbo puts Nagamachi and the downtown shops closer, with Katamachi's restaurants and bars nearby for dinner. Buses from the station take about ten minutes, depending on traffic. A bus or taxi is simplest for arriving with luggage; once you're settled, Nagamachi and the nearby dining streets are within walking distance.

Getting around

Walking is straightforward within each historic district. For longer trips, the Kanazawa Loop Bus leaves from the station's east side and connects the main sightseeing areas. Its right and left loops serve stops in a different order, so check both the direction and destination before boarding. In rain or with heavy shopping, a taxi can shorten the journey back to your hotel.

Arriving and travelling onward

Kanazawa Station has direct Hokuriku Shinkansen services from Tokyo. From Osaka or Kyoto, take the Thunderbird limited express to Tsuruga and change there to the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Allow for that change when planning your arrival or onward journey.

Komatsu Airport buses use the station's west side. Selected services also stop at Korinbo, but downtown departures are much less frequent, so check the timetable for your flight before relying on that stop.

Highway buses connect Kanazawa with Shirakawa-go, and some continue to Takayama. Reservations are required for these services. If you're returning the same day, arrange the return seat along with the outward journey.
