Overview
Kokura Station is Kitakyushu's main rail hub, bringing Shinkansen, regional trains, the city monorail, local buses, and airport coaches together in Kokura Station Area. The south side opens directly into central Kokura, so the station is more than an arrival point.
Connections from here cover Mojiko and destinations across northern Kyushu, including Beppu and Oita. Long-distance travelers can change between the Sanyo Shinkansen and JR Kyushu services without leaving the station complex.
Lines and connections
Shinkansen trains run toward Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo in one direction, and toward Hiroshima, Shin-Osaka, and Tokyo in the other. Kokura is on the Sanyo Shinkansen, though some services continue beyond Hakata onto the Kyushu Shinkansen.
Conventional JR services use the Kagoshima Main Line toward Mojiko, Kurosaki, and Hakata; the Nippo Main Line toward Yukuhashi, Beppu, Oita, and Miyazaki; and the Hitahikosan Line toward the inland Chikuho area. Destinations vary by train, particularly for limited express and through services.
The Kitakyushu Monorail begins inside the station complex and runs south through Heiwa-dori and Tanga Ichiba toward Kikugaoka. JR and the monorail are separate operators, but the transfer remains within the same building.
Airport access
Direct buses reach Kitakyushu Airport in about 35 minutes on the faster service. Some depart from the main bus center, while others use the Shinkansen exit, so check both the stop and timetable before leaving.
Fukuoka Airport requires a transfer at Hakata. Take the subway between the airport and Hakata Station, then continue to Kokura by Shinkansen. It's a straightforward route, but not a single-seat airport transfer.
Station area
The south exit faces central Kokura. The Uomachi and Kyomachi shopping arcades begin a short walk away, Tanga Market is about ten minutes on foot, and Kokura Castle is roughly a 15-minute walk from the station.
The north side, also called the Shinkansen exit, leads into Asano's convention and event district. An aerial walkway reaches RIHGA Royal Hotel Kokura in about three minutes, with the conference center, exhibition facilities, and Mikuni World Stadium also on this side.
What's nearby
AMU Plaza and other station shops provide convenient places to eat or pick up essentials during a transfer. The third-floor tourist information center has multilingual material, while ticket counters, coin lockers, and free Wi-Fi cover common travel needs.
For a longer stop, head south. The covered arcades, market, and castle reveal more of central Kokura than the station complex alone. Mojiko is another easy side trip, about 15 minutes away by local JR train.
Good to know
JR West operates the Shinkansen side, while JR Kyushu runs the conventional lines. Rail-pass rules can differ by pass type even though both sets of platforms belong to the same station.
Allow time to find the correct side. The Shinkansen exit and Asano district are north of the tracks; the monorail, main shopping streets, and route toward the castle are south.
