Overview
A two-minute walk from Kokura Station's Shinkansen Exit brings you to Quintessa Hotel Kokura Comic & Books on the Asano side of the tracks. That short approach helps with early trains, airport-bus arrivals, and events in the nearby convention district, although the hotel isn't directly connected to the station.
The current hotel opened in June 2023 after the former JR Kyushu Hotel Kokura closed. Its signature features are a lobby library of around 10,000 manga and complimentary curry served to overnight guests in the morning and evening.
Rooms
Most rooms are compact. Semi-double, standard double, and economy twin rooms each measure 13 square meters and accommodate up to two guests. At 28 square meters, the Universal Twin is the main accessible and more spacious option.
All rooms are non-smoking, with a smoking area on the first floor. Extra beds and baby cots aren't available, so families and groups should check the bed arrangement carefully before booking.
Facilities
Overnight guests can use the Manga Library around the clock between check-in and checkout. Up to ten books may be borrowed at once and taken back to the room. It's a genuine leisure feature despite the compact rooms and limited common areas.
Coin laundry is helpful for longer stays. Complimentary luggage storage is available before check-in and until 3:00 PM on checkout day, while the limited paid surface parking is allocated on a first-come basis.
Dining
Curry Station serves customizable curry with a choice of toppings. Overnight guests can eat there free of charge from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM and again from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
The morning curry replaces a conventional breakfast service rather than supplementing a full buffet. The evening session is particularly handy after a late rail arrival, while AMU Plaza and the streets south of Kokura Station offer a wider range of restaurants.
Location and transport
The hotel is in Kokura Station Area, two minutes on foot from the Shinkansen Exit. The station handles Sanyo Shinkansen services, regional JR trains, the Kitakyushu Monorail, local buses, and airport coaches. Hakata is roughly 15 to 20 minutes away by Shinkansen, while local trains reach Mojiko in about 15 minutes.
Kitakyushu International Conference Center and the West Japan General Exhibition Center are about ten minutes away on foot. Kokura Castle is roughly 13 minutes from the hotel, across the tracks toward the downtown shopping streets and Tanga Market.
Airport access
From Kitakyushu Airport, the limousine bus takes about 40 minutes to Kokura Station's Shinkansen Exit. The hotel is another two minutes away on foot, so the service runs directly to the station area rather than the hotel door.
Reaching Fukuoka Airport requires a change at Hakata. Take the subway to Hakata Station, then continue to Kokura by Shinkansen or limited express. The Shinkansen is faster, but check both airport and rail timetables before an early departure.
Why stay here
Early Shinkansen departures, events in Asano, and late arrivals from Kitakyushu Airport are easier to manage with the Shinkansen Exit only two minutes away. The manga library and two daily curry sessions give the stay a distinctive character without changing its straightforward, compact format.
Central Kokura is on the other side of the tracks. Walk through the station for the shopping arcades, Tanga Market, and Kokura Castle, or take a local train to Mojiko for its historic waterfront and railway museum.
Good to know
The hotel is close to Kokura Station but not directly connected, so there's still a short street-level walk. Standard rooms are small, and the morning meal is complimentary curry rather than a conventional breakfast buffet.
The former JR Kyushu Hotel Kokura closed in 2023 before the building reopened under the Quintessa name. Don't confuse it with JR Kyushu Station Hotel Kokura, which remains open inside the station complex.
