Overview
Rail and sea travel overlap on Takamatsu's waterfront. JR trains from Okayama and across Shikoku serve Takamatsu Station, while ferries leave nearby Takamatsu Port for Naoshima, Teshima, Shodoshima, and smaller islands off the city.
Most train-to-ferry connections don't require a trip across town. That short distance matters with luggage or an early sailing.
What the area is known for
Sunport Takamatsu stretches along the waterfront beside the JR station. TAKAMATSU ORNE, station shops, and coin lockers cover everyday travel needs, while the waterside paths leave room for a walk between connections.
Compared with Takamatsu-Kawaramachi, this part of central Takamatsu has a more open waterfront feel. The covered arcades and denser restaurant streets are farther inland, so decide whether ferries and JR trains or shopping and dinner should be closer to the hotel.
Main places
Tamamo Park is about three minutes on foot from Takamatsu Station. Its former castle grounds, seawater moats, and surviving historic structures are easy to visit before a train or ferry.
JR Hotel Clement Takamatsu has an airport limousine bus stop at its entrance, while JR Clement Inn Takamatsu is beside the station. Both put the JR platforms and ferry piers within a short walk.
Stations and access
Takamatsu Station and Takamatsu-Chikko Station serve different rail networks. Use Takamatsu Station for JR travel toward Okayama and destinations across Shikoku. Takamatsu-Chikko handles Kotoden trains toward Kotohira and Nagao; reaching the Shido Line requires a change at Kawaramachi.
The Takamatsu Airport limousine bus runs directly between the airport, Takamatsu Station, and JR Hotel Clement Takamatsu in about 40 minutes. The timetable changes with flight schedules, so check the current departure time before relying on a late connection.
Where it fits in a trip
Stay on the waterfront when a ferry, JR train, or airport bus sets the day's schedule. With luggage, the short walks between rail, hotel, and boat are the real benefit.
Kawaramachi is the better comparison when covered shopping arcades, restaurants, and Kotoden transfers matter more than the port. Both parts are easy to visit, but the waterfront cuts out the extra trip back from Kawaramachi before a morning ferry or JR departure.
Good to know
Takamatsu Station isn't a Shinkansen stop. Travelers arriving by bullet train usually change at Okayama and continue across the Seto Ohashi on conventional JR trains.
Ferry piers and ticket offices vary by island and service. Check the exact boarding point and current timetable rather than treating Takamatsu Port as a single departure gate.
