Overview
Sanjo-dori points the way into historic Nara. From JR Nara Station, the city's main shopping street runs east past shops and restaurants toward Sarusawa Pond and Nara Park. Naramachi branches off along the route, so the walk from the station becomes part of the sightseeing rather than a separate transfer.
JR arrivals and airport-bus transfers are easy to manage here, especially with a station-side hotel. Nara Park is roughly 20 minutes away on foot, although city buses also leave from the station. The tradeoff is clear: this isn't the closest place to stay for the park itself.
What the area is known for
The streets immediately around the station are modern rather than historic. Hotels and visitor services are close to the exits, while Sanjo-dori provides a clear route east into older Nara.
The Nara City Tourist Information Center beside the station provides visitor information and same-day luggage storage. Shops and restaurants line Sanjo-dori, while covered shopping streets branch toward Naramachi and Kintetsu Nara Station.
Main places
The station's east side is the starting point for Sanjo-dori and the main bus stops. The tourist information center is nearby, and the preserved former station building is an easy landmark to recognize.
On the west side, Hotel Nikko Nara is directly connected to the station. This is the better side when the shortest route between train and hotel matters; the east side leads toward the center and its sightseeing streets.
Follow Sanjo-dori for the turn toward Naramachi or continue east to Sarusawa Pond, Kofukuji Temple, and Nara Park. The route is straightforward, but the park's main sights extend well beyond its western edge.
Stations and access
JR Nara Station has direct JR services from Kyoto and Osaka via the Nara Line and Yamatoji Line routes. Trains also continue south toward Sakurai on the Manyo-Mahoroba Line.
City buses connect the station with Nara Park, Nishinokyo, and other parts of Nara City. Near the ticket gate, the bus information center sells sightseeing passes and helps visitors navigate local routes. Taxis wait outside for anyone who would rather not walk with luggage.
Direct airport limousine buses serve the JR Nara Station East Exit from Kansai International Airport and Osaka Itami Airport. Schedules vary by route and direction, so confirm the current departure time before planning a flight around the bus.
Where it fits in a trip
Staying here shortens the trip from the JR platform to the hotel room. That matters on an overnight visit from Kyoto or Osaka, after a luggage-heavy arrival, or on a final night before an airport bus. When there's time to explore on foot, Sanjo-dori provides an easy-to-follow route into the historic center.
For a park-focused day trip, the Kintetsu side may be more convenient, especially when immediate access to Nara Park matters more than JR connections or a station-side hotel.

JR Nara Station and Kintetsu Nara Station are separate. Kintetsu Nara Station Area is closer to Nara Park, while the JR side is better aligned with JR arrivals, direct airport buses, and hotels beside the station. Check the full station name when booking a room or following a route map.
