Overview
Ikebukuro Station is located between two busy shopping and entertainment areas in northern Tokyo. Sunshine City and many of the district's anime shops are east of the tracks, while Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre is to the west. JR and subway services connect with central Tokyo, while Tobu and Seibu trains head into Saitama.
If Sunshine City is your main destination, Higashi-Ikebukuro Station provides the shorter walk. Ikebukuro has more rail connections, and the walk to Sunshine City takes you through the east-side shopping streets.
Lines and connections
For Shinjuku and Shibuya, use the JR Yamanote, Saikyo, or Shonan-Shinjuku line. Yamanote trains also reach Nippori and Ueno around the other side of the loop, while the Shonan-Shinjuku Line continues south to Yokohama.
The Marunouchi Line runs directly to Tokyo Station and Ginza. The Fukutoshin Line serves Shinjuku-sanchome without requiring a walk from the main Shinjuku rail complex, then continues to Shibuya. Take the Yurakucho Line for Higashi-Ikebukuro, Yurakucho, and Toyosu.
For a day trip to Kawagoe, use the Tobu Tojo Line. Seibu's Laview limited express travels to Seibu-Chichibu. All seats are reserved, and you'll need a limited-express ticket in addition to the basic fare.
Airport access
For Narita Airport, take the Yamanote Line to Nippori and change to the Keisei Skyliner. Another option is the Narita Express after transferring at Shinjuku Station, since it doesn't serve Ikebukuro directly. For Haneda Airport, one rail route uses the Yamanote Line to Hamamatsucho followed by the Tokyo Monorail.
Airport limousine buses from both airports serve Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Ikebukuro on the west side and Sunshine City stops on the east. A bus can spare you a train change when you're carrying luggage, although road traffic affects journey times. Choose the stop closest to your hotel, then check its departure time.
Station area
Seibu's department store is on the east side, while Tobu's is on the west. These are handy landmarks when choosing an exit. The railway operators have separate gates within the large complex, so follow signs for your operator and line before looking for the platform number.
A hotel described as near Ikebukuro Station could be on either side of the tracks. Check its recommended exit before arriving. Hotel Metropolitan, for example, is about three minutes on foot from West Exit (South).
What's nearby
The east-side shopping streets lead toward Sunshine City, a complex with shops, restaurants, an aquarium, and the Sunshine 60 observation deck. The walk from Exit 35 takes about eight minutes, with additional time needed to reach individual attractions inside. Higashi-Ikebukuro is one stop away on the Yurakucho Line. From there, it's about a three-minute walk to Sunshine City via an underground passage.
Anime and manga shops spread through the surrounding streets, including the Animate flagship store. Closer to Ikebukuro Station, department stores and restaurants provide plenty to explore without continuing to Sunshine City.
West of the tracks, Ikebukuro Nishiguchi Park's Global Ring Theater hosts outdoor performances. Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre presents concerts, plays, and dance.
Good to know
Ikebukuro has no Shinkansen platforms. If you're continuing by bullet train from Tokyo Station, the Marunouchi Line gets you there without changing trains, but allow time to walk from the subway platforms to the JR departure area.
