What this station is useful for

Overview

Hiroshima Station is the main arrival point for many visitors reaching Hiroshima by rail. It sits in the Hiroshima Station Area and combines Sanyo Shinkansen service with JR local trains, Hiroshima Electric Railway streetcars, city buses, taxis, station shopping, and nearby station-linked hotels.

Lines and connections

The station is a stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen, supporting long-distance rail travel between Kansai, Okayama, Hiroshima, Hakata, and onward Kyushu services. JR local lines from the station include the Sanyo Main Line, Kabe Line, Kure Line, and Geibi Line.

For visitors, those local lines matter for day trips and regional travel. The Sanyo Main Line is the usual JR route toward Miyajimaguchi for Miyajima access and also runs east toward Saijo, Mihara, and Fukuyama. The Kure Line serves Kure and the coast toward Mihara, while the Geibi Line runs inland toward Miyoshi.

Airport access

Hiroshima Airport is not linked to the station by direct airport rail. Airport limousine buses run between Hiroshima Airport and Hiroshima Station Shinkansen Gate, with the station-side stop at Platform 5. Travelers should allow margin because road conditions and full buses can affect timing.

Station area

The Shinkansen Gate side is the key side for bullet trains, airport buses, taxis, station hotels, and luggage-heavy arrivals. The South Gate side connects toward streetcars and central Hiroshima. The station complex also includes shopping areas, waiting rooms, coin lockers, ticket offices, and a Hiroshima Electric Railway platform.

What's nearby

Hotel Granvia Hiroshima is directly connected to JR Hiroshima Station, and Hotel Granvia Hiroshima South Gate is part of the station-side hotel cluster. From the station, visitors can continue to Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome by streetcar, bus, or taxi rather than assuming they are immediately outside the station.

Good to know

Hiroshima Station is strongest when the trip depends on Shinkansen timing, airport-bus access, station hotels, or day trips by JR. Travelers who want to spend most evenings around Peace Memorial Park, Hondori, and central restaurants may compare the station area with the city-center side before choosing where to stay.
