Overview
Five rail and subway routes converge at Kanayama Station, south of central Nagoya. JR's Tokaido and Chuo main lines, the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line, and the Meijo and Meiko subway lines make the district especially convenient for airport arrivals and trips across the city.
Kanayama isn't one of Nagoya's main sightseeing districts. Instead, hotels, shops, restaurants, offices, and event venues cluster around a well-connected transport hub. Nagoya Station and Sakae offer denser shopping and nightlife, but neither brings the same combination of rail networks together.
What the area is known for
Transport is Kanayama's defining advantage. JR trains reach Nagoya Station in about five minutes, Meitetsu trains run directly to Chubu Centrair International Airport, and the subway provides straightforward journeys toward Sakae, Nagoya Castle, and Nagoya Port.
It's also a secondary commercial center. Asunal Kanayama stands outside the north exit, with shops and restaurants surrounding an open event space. Hotels and performance venues occupy the blocks south of the station.
Main places
Asunal Kanayama is the immediate focus for shopping and dining on the north side. Its open event space and adjoining bus terminal give it a livelier character than a conventional station mall. Nearby, the Kanayama Tourist Information Center provides English-language assistance and services that include baggage storage.
ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Grand Court Nagoya rises beside the south exit. A covered one-minute connection leads to the station, while high-floor rooms, several restaurants, meeting facilities, and full-service amenities distinguish it from simpler station-side hotels.
Stations and access
Kanayama Station is the district's central interchange. JR's Tokaido and Chuo main lines, Meitetsu's Nagoya Main Line, and both municipal subway routes stop here. The operators use separate tickets and gates, so allow time when changing systems even though the station complex is connected.
Nagoya Station is about five minutes away by JR, where passengers can connect with the Tokaido Shinkansen and other intercity services. The Meijo Line runs directly to Sakae, while the Meiko Line continues toward Nagoya Port.
Where it fits in a trip
The direct airport train is the clearest reason to stay here instead of in the larger Nagoya Station district. Kanayama also supports itineraries combining central Nagoya with Atsuta Jingu, Nagoya Port, or rail journeys east and west along the Tokaido corridor.
The tradeoff is simple. Nagoya Station has doorstep Shinkansen access, while Sakae has a broader choice of downtown shopping and nightlife. Kanayama is less of a destination in itself, but its transport connections are unusually broad.
Good to know
The station has distinct north and south sides. Asunal Kanayama and the tourist information center are by the north exit; ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Grand Court Nagoya is beside the south exit.
Kanayama has no Shinkansen platforms. Transfer at Nagoya Station, and leave enough time to cross the JR concourses when you're traveling with luggage.
