Shijo Station

Shijo Station serves the Shijo-Karasuma area on Kyoto's Karasuma Line, convenient for Nishiki Market, central hotels, shopping, and downtown dining.

What this station is useful for

Overview

Choose Shijo Station if you are staying around Shijo-Karasuma, visiting Nishiki Market, or using one of the central Kyoto hotel areas near the city's main shopping and dining streets. It is not the closest stop to the Shinkansen platforms, but it works well for travelers who want to be in the middle of downtown Kyoto rather than beside the long-distance rail hub.

Lines and connections

Shijo is on the Kyoto Municipal Subway Karasuma Line, which runs north and south through central Kyoto. Trains head south toward Kyoto's main rail hub and north toward Karasuma Oike, where passengers can transfer to the Tozai Line.

Hankyu Karasuma Station is nearby but separate, giving travelers another rail option for movement within downtown Kyoto and for Osaka-side trips when the Hankyu route fits the plan.

Station area

The surrounding Shijo-Karasuma area has a strong concentration of hotels, business blocks, cafes, restaurants, department-store shopping, and access to Nishiki Market. For visitors staying in this part of Kyoto, Shijo is often the more convenient everyday subway stop than a station chosen mainly for Shinkansen access.

Good to know

Shijo and Karasuma Oike are different subway stops. Use Shijo for hotels around Shijo-Karasuma and Nishiki Market; use Karasuma Oike when your route specifically needs the Tozai Line interchange.
