Overview

ASAI Kyoto Shijo is a compact lifestyle hotel between Gojo Station and Shijo Station, in the Kyoto Shijo-Karasuma corridor. It suits travelers who want central Kyoto subway access, a social lobby atmosphere, and dining on site, rather than a stay built around large rooms or direct access to Kyoto Station.

The location works well for visits to Nishiki Market, Pontocho, Gion-side outings, and central Kyoto shopping. It is best understood as a neighborhood-focused stay on the Karasuma subway line, with Kyoto Station reached by subway, bus, or taxi when arrivals, airport transfers, or long-distance rail connections matter.

Rooms

ASAI Kyoto Shijo has 114 rooms in compact categories ranging from 16 to 18 square meters. Room types include Cosy Twin, Comfy Twin, Comfy King, Comfy Hollywood Twin, an accessible Comfy King, and a Comfy Corner Hollywood Twin.

Rooms are non-smoking and designed for short urban stays rather than spreading out. Standard features include rain showers, individual air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, smart TVs, mini fridges, safety boxes, work desks, and city views. Pack light if floor space is a priority.

Facilities

The hotel has a lively communal space for sitting, working, relaxing, or meeting other guests. Guest support includes a smoking room, foreign currency exchange machine, complimentary Wi-Fi, wheelchair-accessible lift access between the entrance and basement floor, accessible rooms, wheelchair-accessible restrooms, and wheelchair rental.

There is no on-site parking. The hotel works best for guests getting around central Kyoto by subway, bus, taxi, or on foot.

Dining

Dining centers on Soi Gaeng, the hotel's Thai curry bar. It serves Thai drinking food, original Thai-inspired cocktails, local craft beer, and wine, with seating for up to 64 guests.

Breakfast is also served at Soi Gaeng on the first level from 7:00 to 10:30, with last order at 10:00. Together, the bar and communal space give the hotel a more social feel than a simple sleep-and-go property.

Location and transport

Gojo Station is about four minutes on foot from Exit 1, while Shijo Station is about five minutes from Exit 5. Both are on the Kyoto Municipal Subway Karasuma Line, making the hotel convenient for north-south trips through central Kyoto.

Kyoto City Bus routes 5 and 26 connect Kyoto Station with the Karasuma Matsubara bus stop, about three minutes on foot from the hotel. A taxi from Kyoto Station is another straightforward final-leg option when luggage or weather makes the subway less appealing.

Airport access

Access from Kansai Airport runs through Kyoto Station rather than by hotel-door shuttle. The JR Haruka express connects Kansai Airport with Kyoto Station, where guests continue by taxi, bus route 5 or 26, or another local connection to the hotel.

The route is easy to understand, but it is not direct. If the shortest possible airport or Shinkansen transfer is the priority, a Kyoto Station hotel will be simpler.

Why stay here

ASAI Kyoto Shijo is a good fit for travelers who want a compact central Kyoto stay with subway access at both Gojo and Shijo, a social communal space, and Thai dining in the building. It is strongest when you plan to spend time around Shijo-Karasuma, Nishiki Market, Pontocho, and central Kyoto rather than returning repeatedly to the main station.

Good to know

The hotel is close to two subway stops, but it is not directly connected to either one. Rooms are compact, and there is no on-site parking, so choose it for location, dining, and a lively shared space rather than generous room size or car access.
