Overview
On the western side of Kyoto Shijo-Karasuma, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shijo is about six minutes on foot from Shijo Station. Karasuma Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line is also six minutes away, giving guests both subway and private-rail options for sightseeing, shopping, and dining across central Kyoto.
The main building and annex contain 347 rooms, including layouts for up to four guests. An overnight public bath, Kyoto-style breakfast, and paid baggage transfers through Kyoto Station add useful comforts for a multi-night stay.
Rooms
Rooms range from 15-square-meter singles to larger twin, triple, and four-bed layouts. Wide-king and queen rooms give couples additional choices, while triples measure 25 to 29 square meters and four-bed rooms measure 32 to 33 square meters. These larger categories give groups fixed beds rather than relying entirely on sofa beds.
All rooms are non-smoking. The main building and annex use different color palettes, though both feature design motifs inspired by kimono, obi, and the Gion Festival. Families and groups should compare the buildings and bed arrangements carefully, as room size and capacity vary substantially by category.
Facilities
The first-floor public bath is open from 3:00 PM until 9:00 AM. A lantern-lit garden and rest area continue the Gion Festival theme, and the long overnight schedule leaves time for a soak after dinner or before an early start.
Coin laundry is available for longer stays. The hotel also runs a paid baggage service with Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Station, so guests can leave bags near Kyoto Station before check-in or collect them there after checkout. On-site parking is limited, so arriving by subway, train, bus, or taxi is usually simpler.
Dining
Restaurant KOZUE serves a Japanese and Western breakfast buffet from 6:30 to 10:00. Kyoto-style obanzai, seasonal vegetables, dashi egg rolls, local bread, and a range of hot and cold dishes give breakfast more local character than a basic continental spread.
For lunch and dinner, the surrounding Shijo-Karasuma streets offer department-store dining, casual restaurants, cafes, and bars within walking distance. Breakfast can be the in-house meal, while the neighborhood supplies plenty of choices for the rest of the day.
Location and transport
Shijo Station is on the Karasuma Line, two stops north of Kyoto Station and one stop south of Karasuma Oike Station. Shinkansen arrivals and JR connections remain manageable, but the hotel is closer to downtown shopping and dining than accommodations beside Kyoto's main rail hub.
Karasuma Station adds the Hankyu Kyoto Line. Trains run east to Kyoto Kawaramachi and toward Osaka, while Shijo Station provides a direct north-south subway route through central Kyoto. Both walks are outdoors.
Airport access
From Kansai International Airport, the Haruka limited express and airport buses travel directly to Kyoto Station. From there, continue two stops on the Karasuma Line to Shijo, followed by a walk of about six minutes.
Airport buses from Osaka International Airport also serve Kyoto Station. There isn't a hotel-door airport shuttle, so airport journeys finish with a subway transfer, taxi ride, or local bus connection.
Why stay here
Two nearby rail lines, rooms for up to four guests, and an overnight public bath make a multi-night sightseeing stay easier to organize. The tradeoff is a six-minute outdoor walk rather than a station-door arrival, but dinner and shopping won't usually require another cross-city trip.
Shijo-Karasuma is one of central Kyoto's main shopping and dining areas, with Nishiki Market nearby and department stores lining Shijo Street. The district is busier and more commercial than the temple streets of Gion or Higashiyama, but it keeps everyday meals, shops, and transport close together.
Good to know
The hotel isn't directly connected to either station. Allow time for the six-minute outdoor walk from Shijo or Karasuma, especially with luggage, and consider the paid Kyoto Station baggage service if you'd like to start sightseeing before check-in.
The public bath can become crowded at popular times, and towels must be brought from the room. Current hotel policy allows guests with tattoos to use the bath. On-site parking is limited.
