Overview

yugen kyoto shijo is a central Kyoto hotel near the Kawaramachi and Kiyamachi side of downtown, about a six-minute walk from Kyoto Kawaramachi Station and about nine minutes from Shijo Station. It is a good fit for travelers who want to stay close to Shijo-Kawaramachi rather than beside Kyoto's main long-distance rail terminal.

The hotel opened with 58 rooms, a restaurant, a public bath, a sauna, and a gym. Its clearest tradeoff is location: shopping streets, the Kamo River side, and Hankyu or subway access are close at hand, while Shinkansen and airport arrivals still require a transfer through Kyoto Station.

Rooms

The hotel has 11 room types across 58 rooms, with published sizes ranging from 30.7 square meters in the Standard Twin Universal Design room to 94.9 square meters in the Signature Spa Suite with Sauna. That gives the lineup more space and variety than many compact Kyoto city hotels.

Room categories include twin, king, triple, and suite layouts. Some add sofa beds for up to three guests, the Executive Triple has three beds, and the Signature Spa Suite with Sauna has one king bed, two sofa beds, and capacity for up to four guests. Rooms are non-smoking and include Wi-Fi, individual air conditioning, bathrooms, safes, kettles, tea sets, and refrigerators.

Facilities

The basement bath-and-sauna area is the main feature beyond the guest rooms. Staying guests can use the public bath and dry sauna from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 1:00 AM. The sauna area includes auto-loyly and a cold-water bath.

A gym is available 24 hours for staying guests. The hotel does not have dedicated parking, so arrival by rail, bus, taxi, or on foot is generally easier than coming by car.

Dining

All-Day Dining Arbrin is located on the first floor. Breakfast is served from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM, with a buffet centered on vegetables, deli items, and bread. Lunch runs from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM and pairs a main dish with a buffet of bread, salad, and soup.

The same restaurant also handles cafe and dinner service. Cafe hours run from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, while dinner is served from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with last order at 10:00 PM. The dining room has 50 non-smoking seats.

Location and transport

Kyoto Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line is the closest named rail point, about six minutes away on foot. From there, the hotel works well for Shijo-Kawaramachi, Kiyamachi, the Kamo River side, and Hankyu trips toward Osaka Umeda.

Shijo Station on the Karasuma subway line is about nine minutes away on foot and is the better route to use when arriving from Kyoto Station by subway. Buses from Kyoto Station also stop at Kawaramachi Matsubara, about a four-minute walk from the hotel.

Airport access

Airport access involves a transfer rather than a direct door-to-door route. The hotel's route guidance sends passengers from Kansai International Airport or Itami Airport to Kyoto Station Hachijo Exit by limousine bus, then onward by the Karasuma subway line to Shijo Station, followed by the final walk.

The route is manageable, but luggage adds some effort. Travelers who want the simplest Shinkansen or airport transfer may prefer the Kyoto Station area; this hotel is better suited to stays focused on downtown Kyoto.

Why stay here

Choose yugen kyoto shijo if you want a downtown Kyoto location, room options beyond the basics, a bath-and-sauna floor, and an in-house restaurant, with Kawaramachi and Kiyamachi closer than the long-distance rail hub. You gain easier access to the city's central shopping and riverside areas, while airport and Shinkansen travel days still involve Kyoto Station plus a local transfer.

Good to know

Use Kyoto Kawaramachi Station for Hankyu access and the shortest station walk. Use Shijo Station when connecting from Kyoto Station by subway. The hotel has no dedicated parking, so public transport is the cleaner arrival plan.
