Overview
One station serves two very different sides of central Fukuoka. Nakasu-Kawabata Station lies between Nakasu's riverside entertainment streets and the Riverain and Kawabata side of Fukuoka-Nakasu-Kawabata. It is both an Airport Line stop and the western end of the Hakozaki Line, covering city-center journeys and trips toward northeastern Fukuoka.
For most visitors, the Airport Line is the key connection. Trains run directly to Fukuoka Airport, Hakata, and Tenjin, while the Kawabata gate provides an indoor approach to Hakata Riverain and Hotel Okura Fukuoka.
Lines and connections
Nakasu-Kawabata is K09 on the Airport Line and H01 on the Hakozaki Line. Eastbound Airport Line trains stop at Gion and Hakata Station before reaching Fukuoka Airport. In the other direction, Tenjin Station is one stop away, with trains continuing through Akasaka and Ohori Park to Meinohama.
Hakozaki Line trains run east through Gofukumachi, Chiyo-Kenchoguchi, and the Hakozaki side of the city to Kaizuka. Some services continue onto the Airport Line toward Nishijin or Meinohama, but the pattern varies by train. Check the destination display before boarding.
Airport access
Direct Airport Line trains reach Fukuoka Airport Station in about nine minutes. The subway arrives beneath the Domestic Terminal, so the journey is straightforward for domestic flights.
International flights require another step. The International Terminal occupies a separate building, linked to the Domestic Terminal and subway station by a free shuttle bus. Allow time for that transfer, or compare the direct airport bus instead.
Station area
The exits lead toward two contrasting districts: Nakasu's evening streets on one side and Kawabata's shopping and cultural quarter on the other. Hakata Riverain brings together Hakataza Theater, the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, mall restaurants, and shops, all reached by an indoor route from the station.
Hotel Okura Fukuoka is about three minutes from the Kawabata gate, following the route toward Exit 6 through Hakata Riverain Mall. The covered approach is welcome in rainy weather, though it isn't a platform-level hotel entrance.
What's nearby
Kawabata Shopping Arcade begins close to the station and continues toward Kushida Shrine and the older streets of Hakata. Elsewhere in the district, Nakasu's restaurants, bars, yatai stalls, and riverside walks become livelier after dark.
That contrast is part of the appeal. A daytime visit to Hakata Riverain, the theater, museum, or shopping arcade can easily lead into an evening in Nakasu.
Good to know
The line names matter. Take the Airport Line for Fukuoka Airport, Hakata, Tenjin, and stops west of the city center. For Gofukumachi and Kaizuka, use the Hakozaki Line, and confirm that any through-running service matches your destination before remaining on board.
Shinkansen passengers need to continue two stops to Hakata Station. Nakasu-Kawabata is closer to the surrounding district and convenient for subway journeys, but it has no JR or long-distance rail platforms.
