Overview
The Naka River provides the backdrop at breakfast. In central Nakasu, Hakata Excel Hotel Tokyu is about one minute from Exit 1 of Nakasu-Kawabata Station, where direct Airport Line trains serve Fukuoka Airport, Hakata, and Tenjin.
With 308 rooms, it's larger than many compact city hotels in Fukuoka-Nakasu-Kawabata. A broad range of room sizes and a river-facing charcoal-grill restaurant help distinguish the hotel, while Nakasu's restaurants and nightlife begin just outside.
Rooms
All rooms are non-smoking and occupy the third through 12th floors. Standard singles, doubles, and twins measure roughly 18 to 20 square metres, offering the compact layouts familiar in central Fukuoka.
Larger categories provide a noticeable increase in space. Superior doubles and twins measure about 39 square metres, while Premier rooms and the Japanese-Western AOI Room are 43.5 square metres. Excel Suites extend to about 84 square metres, with separate bedroom and living areas. A 33.5-square-metre barrier-free twin is also available.
Facilities
Coin laundry is on the third floor, while the lobby has a microwave and vending machines. A 24-hour foreign-currency exchange machine can help international arrivals who need yen before heading out.
On-site parking is available in a 52-space mechanical garage. Spaces are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, vehicle limits apply, and overnight entry is possible only between 6:00 AM and midnight.
Dining
Charcoal Grill Keyaki faces the Naka River from the second floor. Its Japanese and Western breakfast buffet runs from 6:45 to 10:00 AM, featuring ingredients from Fukuoka, Itoshima, and the Genkai Sea. The open charcoal grill adds freshly cooked dishes to the spread.
Keyaki also serves lunch, though it normally closes on Tuesdays. In-house dining is most helpful earlier in the day. For dinner, Nakasu's many restaurants provide far more choice.
Location and transport
Exit 1 of Nakasu-Kawabata Station is about one minute away, but the route uses stairs. Exit 4 takes about two minutes and has an escalator, which can make it the easier approach with luggage.
The station serves both the Airport and Hakozaki subway lines. Tenjin Station is one stop west, while Hakata Station is two stops east for Shinkansen and JR connections. The Hakozaki Line continues toward Gofukumachi and Kaizuka.
Airport access
Direct Airport Line trains travel from Fukuoka Airport to Nakasu-Kawabata in about nine minutes. Passengers arriving at the Domestic Terminal don't need to change trains, and the final walk to the hotel begins at Exit 1 or Exit 4.
The subway station is beneath the Domestic Terminal. International passengers must first take the airport's free inter-terminal shuttle, which typically takes about ten minutes, or compare a direct bus or taxi instead.
Why stay here
The short walk from the subway, direct airport trains, and room categories extending well beyond compact standards can simplify both arrival and longer stays. The tradeoff is clear: this is lively Nakasu, not a hotel beside Hakata's Shinkansen platforms.
Kawabata Shopping Arcade brings older Hakata shops and covered browsing into the surrounding district. Kushida Shrine and Canal City Hakata can be combined on the same daytime walk, while Nakasu itself grows busier with restaurants and nightlife after dark.
Good to know
Despite Hakata in its name, the hotel is in Nakasu, two subway stops from Hakata Station. Guests sensitive to nightlife should consider the evening atmosphere before choosing this location.
All guest rooms are non-smoking, with a smoking booth in the first-floor lobby. Checkout is by 11:00 AM. Luggage sent ahead can be held at the front desk when labeled with the guest's name and stay date.
