Overview
Motomachi Station is the rail stop for Kobe's Chinatown, the covered Motomachi shopping arcade, and the Former Foreign Settlement. The JR and Hanshin stations share the name and stand beside each other on the northern edge of Kobe Motomachi / Nankinmachi, but their gates are separate.
It's smaller than Sannomiya and easier to navigate. Motomachi is the more convenient stop when Chinatown or the historic commercial streets come first. Continue one stop east to Sannomiya when you need a broader choice of railways or the Port Liner.
Lines and connections
JR Motomachi is on the JR Kobe Line. Eastbound trains put Sannomiya one stop away and continue to Osaka, while westbound services follow the coast toward Himeji. This puts central Kobe trips and regional day trips along the same rail corridor.
Hanshin Motomachi is alongside the JR station. Eastbound services run toward Kobe-Sannomiya and the wider Hanshin network, while westbound trains continue through the Kobe Kosoku and Sanyo rail corridors. Check the operator before entering because JR and Hanshin use different gates and tickets.
Airport access
There is no direct airport train from Motomachi. For Kobe Airport, travel one stop to Sannomiya and change to the Port Liner. Buses for Kansai International Airport and Osaka Itami Airport also use the Sannomiya district rather than Motomachi itself.
The extra connection is short but worth considering with luggage. A hotel in Sannomiya provides simpler access to airport buses and the Port Liner, while Motomachi places you closer to Chinatown and Kobe's historic center.
Station area
Nankinmachi begins south of the tracks, with Daimaru Kobe and the Former Foreign Settlement to the east. Motomachi Shopping Street extends west through a long covered arcade, keeping shops and casual food close even in poor weather.
From there, the streets continue downhill toward the harbor. Meriken Park and Kobe Port Tower are farther south, while Minato-Motomachi Station offers another approach from the subway side of the district.
What's nearby
Chinatown is the main reason many visitors use Motomachi Station. Restaurants, food stalls, and shops fill its compact grid, while the Former Foreign Settlement offers a contrasting walk among European-influenced commercial architecture.
Hotel Okura Kobe is about ten minutes away on foot for travelers planning a waterfront stay. The hotel stands inside Meriken Park, near Kobe Port Tower and the Kobe Maritime Museum.
Good to know
JR Motomachi, Hanshin Motomachi, and Minato-Motomachi are not a single station complex. JR and Hanshin are side by side near Chinatown, while Minato-Motomachi is a separate Kobe Municipal Subway stop closer to the waterfront. Match the station name and operator to your route before following signs.
