Overview
Beppu Station brings JR trains, the airport bus, and local sightseeing buses together in central Beppu. The east side faces the hot-spring streets and bay, while the west side leads toward the mountains and bus routes for Kannawa. Start by choosing the right exit. It can save an unnecessary walk around the station.
The surrounding Beppu Station Area is convenient for hotels and central public baths. Kannawa is a separate hot-spring district, though both areas are important parts of a first visit to Beppu.
Lines and connections
The station is on JR Kyushu's Nippo Main Line. Sonic limited express trains run north through Kokura toward Hakata and south to Oita, while local trains and other limited express services connect destinations along Kyushu's eastern side.
Selected itineraries also connect Beppu with Yufuin and other inland destinations, but train names and through-service patterns vary. Check the current timetable before planning around a specific limited express.
Local buses provide the main sightseeing connection. Routes from the station reach Kannawa and the principal Hells area in about 20 minutes, so the geothermal sights are accessible without a car.
Airport access
The scheduled Airliner bus connects Beppu Station with Oita Airport. The journey generally takes around 50 minutes, although schedules and road conditions can affect the timing.
This is public transport rather than a hotel shuttle. Check the operator's current stop and departure time, especially before an early flight or a tight rail connection.
Station area
The East Exit is the better side for central Beppu, the tourist information counter, Ekimae-dori, and the bay. Onyado Nono Beppu is about one minute away, allowing guests to leave their luggage before exploring the city.
The West Exit serves mountain-side buses and parts of Beppu uphill from the railway. Both sides have bus stops, so checking the route number is more reliable than assuming every sightseeing service leaves from the same curb.
What's nearby
Takegawara Onsen is about a ten-minute walk from the station through central Beppu. It is an easy first landmark for visitors who want a historic public bath without traveling to another hot-spring district.
Kannawa and the Hells aren't nearby in the same sense. They make an easy local-bus outing, but the distance and elevation make walking impractical for most visitors.
Good to know
Coin lockers and a staffed ticket counter are available at the station. The Hells are divided between two clusters, so reaching Kannawa is only the first step in planning the full sightseeing circuit.
