Overview
Arriving in central Beppu is straightforward. The district extends from Beppu Station toward the old onsen streets and the bay, with the Airliner stop and tourist information near the rail entrance. Restaurants and hotels fill the surrounding blocks, a compact arrangement that helps on short stays and luggage-heavy travel days.
This isn't Kannawa. Older downtown baths are within walking distance, but the steam-filled lanes and main Hells require a bus ride uphill.
What the area is known for
The station's east side opens onto Ekimae-dori and central Beppu Onsen. Takegawara Onsen, the district's best-known historic landmark, is about ten minutes away on foot. Smaller public baths and everyday city streets occupy the blocks between the station and the bay.
Tourist information near the station can help with bus routes, baggage questions, and onsen planning. Stop there first if your day combines central Beppu with Kannawa.
Main places
Ekimae-dori provides the clearest route into central Beppu. Takegawara Onsen lies south of this axis, while the bayfront is farther east. Hotels immediately around the station favor quick check-in and early departures over a secluded resort atmosphere.
One minute from the station, Onyado Nono Beppu combines that transport-friendly location with top-floor hot-spring baths. It suits travelers who want a daily onsen soak without moving away from the main rail and bus hub.
Stations and access
JR limited express trains connect Beppu with Oita, Kokura, and Hakata. The Oita Airport Airliner also stops at Beppu Station, bringing flight and rail arrivals into the same part of the city.
Local buses reach Kannawa and the main Hells area in about 20 minutes. The journey is straightforward, but these sights aren't within walking distance of the station-side hotel district. The Hells are divided between two clusters, so another transport choice awaits after arrival.
Where it fits in a trip
The station area works naturally for a first or last night, a short Beppu stay, or an itinerary continuing along the Nippo Main Line. Central baths and Takegawara remain walkable, while buses cover the higher onsen districts.
Kannawa is better if waking among steam vents matters more than quick rail connections. Myoban feels more removed again. Staying near Beppu Station simplifies transport, but it doesn't place every onsen district at your door.
Good to know
Check which side of the station your bus uses before departure. Airport and sightseeing routes have separate stops, and the east and west sides serve different parts of a Beppu visit.
