Overview

Hokkaido is Japan's northern island region and works differently from the compact rail corridors of central Honshu. For travel planning, it is best understood as a large, spread-out region with Sapporo as the main urban base, New Chitose Airport as the busiest arrival point, Hakodate and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto as the southern rail gateway, and long-distance rail, highway bus, domestic flight, ferry, and rental-car movement all playing a role.

What the region is known for

The region is known for powder snow, wide landscapes, national parks, volcanoes, lakes, hot springs, seafood, dairy, ramen, beer, flowers, autumn color, wildlife, and cool summer travel. Sapporo anchors the island with shopping, dining, Susukino nightlife, Odori Park, winter events, and easy access to Otaru and Jozankei. Hakodate adds a historic port, morning market, Goryokaku, southern Hokkaido rail access, and classic night views. Asahikawa works as a northern and inland gateway for Asahiyama Zoo, Biei, Furano, and routes toward Sounkyo, Wakkanai, Abashiri, and the Okhotsk side.

Kushiro, Obihiro, Abashiri, Kitami, Wakkanai, Tomakomai, Muroran, Chitose, Otaru, Furano, Biei, Niseko, Noboribetsu, and Lake Toya each represent a different travel pattern: wetlands, drift ice, eastern lakes, farm and garden landscapes, ferry ports, ski areas, hot springs, coastal food trips, and rural road journeys.

Main gateways

Sapporo is the simplest first base for most visitors because it combines hotels, rail, subway, airport trains, restaurants, shopping, and day-trip options. New Chitose Airport is the practical air gateway for Sapporo, Otaru, Chitose, Tomakomai, and many onward bus or rail routes. Hakodate is the southern gateway for travelers arriving by Hokkaido Shinkansen or ferry, while Asahikawa, Kushiro, Obihiro, Memanbetsu, Wakkanai, and other regional airports can make sense when the itinerary focuses on central, eastern, or northern Hokkaido.

Getting around and onward travel

The Hokkaido Shinkansen currently reaches Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, with onward limited express rail service toward Hakodate and Sapporo. JR Hokkaido routes connect Sapporo with Hakodate, Otaru, Asahikawa, Abashiri, Wakkanai, Obihiro, Kushiro, Furano, Biei, and other regional stations, but travel times can be long and weather can matter, especially in winter. For national parks, ski areas, flower fields, onsen towns, capes, lakes, and east Hokkaido wildlife routes, buses or rental cars are often part of the realistic plan.

Where to stay

Choose Sapporo Station Area when the trip needs the broadest transport range, airport access, shopping, and easy onward trains. Choose Susukino when evening dining, nightlife, and subway access matter more than immediate rail convenience. Choose Hakodate, Asahikawa, Kushiro, Obihiro, Otaru, Niseko, Furano, Biei, Noboribetsu, Lake Toya, Abashiri, or Wakkanai when the trip is built around a specific side of Hokkaido rather than a Sapporo-centered itinerary.
