Overview
Obihiro is the main city in Tokachi, eastern Hokkaido, and a straightforward place to combine local food, open countryside, hot springs, and relaxed rural drives with an easy city-center stay. For most visitors, Obihiro Station and Tokachi-Obihiro Airport are the key transport points.
The city is more than a stop between Sapporo and eastern Hokkaido. It gives first-time visitors to Tokachi an easy place to arrive, eat well, and decide how far into the region they want to travel.
What the city is known for
Food is central to Obihiro's appeal. Butadon, the pork rice bowl closely associated with Tokachi and Obihiro, is the local dish many visitors seek out first, and long-established shops can be found around the station side of town.
Obihiro's other signature attraction is Banei horse racing at Obihiro Racecourse. Draft horses pull heavy sleds along a straight sand track with hills, a style of racing found only in Obihiro. Beyond the city, Tokachi is known for broad fields, big skies, cafes, dairy products, sweets, gardens, and hot-spring areas.
Main areas
The Obihiro Station Area is the most convenient part of the city for hotels, rail travel, airport buses, downtown dining, and short stays. It is the easiest place to start if you are arriving without a car or want butadon restaurants and everyday services close at hand.
Obihiro Racecourse, Tokachigawa Onsen, gardens, Kofuku Station, and the wider countryside are separate outing choices. They are all part of a Tokachi trip, but they are not all walkable sights from the station area.
Getting around and onward travel
Obihiro Station is served by the JR Nemuro Main Line. For longer rail journeys, the city lies on the route between Sapporo, Kushiro, and Nemuro, which makes it a useful stop for trips across central and eastern Hokkaido.
Tokachi-Obihiro Airport is reached by bus or car. Airport buses connect the airport with Obihiro Station Bus Terminal in about 38 minutes, while the hotel access route takes about 40 minutes by bus. For wider Tokachi sightseeing, renting a car often makes travel simpler because distances between rural sights can be long.
Where to stay and where to go next
Stay near Obihiro Station when rail timing, airport-bus access, luggage, and easy food stops matter most. From there, plan separate outings for Banei horse racing, hot springs, gardens, rural drives, or onward travel toward Kushiro and eastern Hokkaido.
