Why stay here

Overview

An airport night doesn't have to mean staying at the airport. The area around Chitose Station offers a town-side alternative in central Chitose, with hotels and restaurants along the JR route between the airport and Sapporo.

Typical trains reach New Chitose Airport in about ten minutes, while rapid services reach Sapporo in about 30 minutes. A first or final night here stays close to flight logistics without limiting every meal and spare hour to the airport complex.

What the area is known for

This is an everyday city center rather than a sightseeing district. Hotels, restaurants, convenience stores, and ordinary shopping spread across both sides of the station, giving the neighborhood a more local feel than the airport terminals.

Main places

Salmon Hometown Chitose Aquarium is about a 15-minute walk east of the station. Its underwater observation zone has riverbank windows looking directly into the Chitose River, alongside indoor displays about salmon and freshwater life.

The aquarium adjoins Salmon Park Chitose Roadside Station, where food, local produce, and Chitose specialties can extend the visit. Together, they form the clearest visitor outing within easy reach of the station area.

Stations and access

Chitose Station is a separate stop from New Chitose Airport Station, which is on B1F of the airport terminal building. Staying in central Chitose therefore requires a short train or road transfer to airline check-in. It isn't an indoor walk from hotel to counter.

Long-distance trains toward Hakodate, Obihiro, and Kushiro generally require a transfer at Minami-Chitose. Don't confuse that transfer point with central Chitose Station when booking onward travel.

Where it fits in a trip

JR Inn Chitose is beside the station and keeps the luggage walk short. ANA Crowne Plaza Chitose is farther west beyond Aeon and has free parking, which helps on rental-car itineraries.

Buses from Chitose Station reach Lake Shikotsu in about 45 minutes. The route makes a car-free lake outing possible, though the lake is too far away to count as a neighborhood attraction.

Good to know

Chitose Station is not at the airport. For a very early departure or late arrival, check the day's JR timetable before choosing a town-side hotel. If walking straight to the airline counters matters most, stay inside the airport complex instead.
