Overview
The crossing is only one side of Shibuya. The district wraps around Shibuya Station, from Hachiko and the western slopes to the east-side towers and southern passages.
For a first visit, choose the side before choosing a hotel. A short distance on the map can still mean stairs, indoor passages, and a crowded street crossing.
How the area divides
The Hachiko side is the familiar Shibuya of the statue, Scramble Crossing, Center-gai, and Shibuya 109. Continue into Udagawacho or Maruyamacho for record shops, small cinemas, live music, bars, and clubs. This side stays busy well into the evening.
Shibuya Mark City and Dogenzaka lie west of the tracks. Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu has indoor access through Mark City, while Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel is a short walk southwest. Both have direct airport buses, which can be easier than crossing the rail complex with large luggage.
Scramble Square connects directly to the east side, with SHIBUYA SKY at the top. Shibuya Hikarie is next door, while Shibuya Stream extends south with shops, restaurants, offices, and hotels. Miyashita Park draws the district north toward Harajuku with shops, restaurants, and a rooftop park.
Stations and access
The rail network is easiest to understand by destination. JR trains provide straightforward trips to Harajuku, Shinjuku, Shinagawa, Ikebukuro, and Yokohama. The Ginza and Hanzomon subway lines cross central and eastern Tokyo, while Fukutoshin Line trains continue onto the Tokyu Toyoko Line for Daikanyama and Yokohama. The separate Keio Inokashira Line terminal serves Shimokitazawa and Kichijoji.
Direct Narita Express trains serve Shibuya. Reaching Haneda Airport by rail requires a transfer, but airport buses stop at selected west-side hotels and terminals. Check the exact boarding point before departure because Shibuya doesn't have a single central airport-bus stop.
Where it fits in a trip
Stay in Shibuya when shopping, music, dining, or late evenings are central to the trip. It also suits repeated journeys around western Tokyo or south toward Yokohama. The east and south sides put newer commercial complexes closer. Hachiko and Dogenzaka shorten the walk back from nightlife.
Travelers planning early Shinkansen departures or spending most days in Asakusa and eastern Tokyo may find Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, or Ueno more convenient. Shibuya is rewarding, but it isn't Tokyo's simplest district for quiet streets or uncomplicated rail navigation.

Shibuya Station is shared by four operators and spread across several levels. Hachiko signs lead toward the crossing. East and south routes serve Scramble Square, Hikarie, and Shibuya Stream; west-side routes lead toward Mark City, Dogenzaka, and Cerulean Tower.
Redevelopment can change familiar passages. Follow current signs and check the exit nearest your destination before arriving, especially when you're carrying luggage.
