Why stay here

Overview

New Chitose Airport is the main airport area for Chitose and Hokkaido. The district brings together the domestic and international terminals, New Chitose Airport Station, airport hotels, shopping and dining areas, rental cars, buses, and passenger services within one large terminal complex.

What the area is known for

The airport works well as more than just a place to catch a flight. Its terminals include major shopping and dining zones, with Hokkaido food and souvenir options alongside entertainment and relaxation facilities. Hotels and onsen facilities also make the area a convenient choice before an early departure or after a late arrival.

Main places

The main visitor cluster includes the domestic terminal, international terminal, connecting passages, JR station, shopping and restaurant zones, hotels, and onsen facilities. Portom International Hokkaido is on the 4th floor of the International Terminal Building, while the JR station is on B1F of the terminal complex.

Although many places are described as being inside the airport, the terminal area is large enough that walks can still take time. Travelers with luggage should check whether their hotel, airline counter, bus stop, or JR gate is on the domestic or international side.

Stations and access

New Chitose Airport Station is the JR hub for the airport area, located on B1F of the terminal building. The fastest airport trains between New Chitose Airport and Sapporo take about 33 minutes.

Some airport trains continue directly toward Otaru. For many other destinations in Hokkaido, travelers usually transfer at Sapporo or Minami-Chitose. As a place to stay, the airport area is especially convenient for flights and Sapporo rail connections, though it is less suited to late-night plans in central Sapporo.

Where it fits in a trip

Choose New Chitose Airport for early flights, late arrivals, winter-weather buffers, terminal hotels, airport shopping, and straightforward JR access toward Sapporo. Choose Sapporo instead when flight timing does not require staying near the terminal and you want a fuller city stay.
