Why stay here

Overview

Leave time for the airport itself. Hokkaido's main air gateway has enough regional food, shopping, entertainment, and onsen facilities to fill a long gap before departure. Direct JR trains from New Chitose Airport Station and two in-terminal hotels can also simplify a first or final night when flight timing matters.

Food and time at the airport

There's no need to rush straight to the gate. Dining areas cover Hokkaido seafood, ramen, and soup curry, while dairy sweets and other regional favorites provide plenty of options for a lighter stop. The shops are also handy for local gifts and travel essentials.

If you have several hours to spare, the onsen and entertainment areas offer alternatives to waiting near the gate. This is still an airport, but it can absorb more of the day's dining, shopping, and downtime than a quick check-in plan might suggest.

Hotels and terminal layout

The two airport hotels aren't side by side. Air Terminal Hotel is in the Domestic Terminal, about a five-minute walk from New Chitose Airport Station. Portom International Hokkaido is in the International Terminal, roughly ten minutes from the station through the connecting passage.

Both are inside the airport complex, but the domestic and international sides can feel far apart when you're carrying luggage. Match the hotel to your airline terminal and allow for the walk from the JR station.

Trains and onward travel

New Chitose Airport Station is on B1F of the terminal building. The fastest Airport trains reach Sapporo in 33 minutes, and some continue directly to Otaru. Not every service runs beyond Sapporo, so check the destination before boarding.

Minami-Chitose is the key transfer point for rail journeys toward southern and eastern Hokkaido, including the Hakodate and Kushiro directions. This lets you connect the airport with a longer rail itinerary without routing every trip through central Sapporo.

Where it fits in a trip

An airport overnight removes the extra city transfer before an early departure or after a late arrival. It also leaves time for dinner, shopping, or the onsen. If several days in Sapporo are the main purpose of your trip, staying in the city avoids repeating the airport rail journey.

Good to know

Check three things before setting out: your airline terminal, your hotel's side of the complex, and the route from the JR station. Inside the airport doesn't always mean beside the check-in counter.
