Overview
Tokaido Shinkansen trains arrive at Shizuoka Station on the edge of downtown. Most central sightseeing starts from the north side, where streets lead toward Gofukumachi, Sunpu Castle Park, and the city's oden alleys. The south side is closer to Shizuoka Science Museum Ru-ku-ru and several hotels.
With hotels near both exits and places to eat inside the station complex, the surrounding Shizuoka Station Area is an easy choice for an overnight rail stop. Central sights are walkable, but Nihondaira and the Toro Ruins require a bus from the station.
Lines and connections
JR Central operates both the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Tokaido Main Line here. The Shinkansen handles longer journeys along the Tokaido corridor, while the Main Line serves local trips through the prefecture, including travel toward Shimizu and Yaizu.
Buses are just as important for sightseeing. Services from the station run to Nihondaira and the Toro Ruins, neither of which is a short walk from the JR platforms.
Airport access
Direct Shizutetsu Justline buses connect Shizuoka Station with Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport in about 50 minutes. There's no direct airport train. Road conditions can delay the bus, and passengers are limited to the available seats, so check the current timetable and allow a comfortable margin before your flight.
Station area
Parche and ASTY Shizuoka connect directly to the station, putting meals, snacks, and local gifts under cover. That's especially convenient between trains or in wet weather.
Exit choice matters. The north side faces the main route into downtown and is usually more direct for central shops and historic sights. If your hotel or destination is south of the tracks, use the south exit instead, particularly when carrying luggage.
What's nearby
Sunpu Castle Park is about 20 minutes away on foot. Gofukumachi and Aoba Oden Street are on the same side of the center, so all three fit naturally into a walk from the station.
Shizuoka Science Museum Ru-ku-ru is a short walk from the south exit. It can be paired with a south-side hotel stay or used as an indoor stop before a train.
Good to know
Shizuoka City extends far beyond its walkable center. Miho no Matsubara, Shimizu Port, and the coast aren't station-area stops, so allow time for local rail, bus, or road travel. On a first visit, separate the places you can reach on foot from the north side from those that depend on a timed connection.
