Overview
Choose Sanjo Keihan Station if you want east-side Kyoto access around Sanjo, Higashiyama, and the northern edge of Kyoto-Gion, with the Kamo River, Pontocho, and downtown Kyoto still close at hand. It works well for hotel stays that fall between Gion's atmosphere and the more central shopping and dining areas across the river.
Lines and connections
Sanjo Keihan Station is on the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line. Nearby Sanjo Station on the Keihan Main Line adds north-south rail options along Kyoto's east side, including access toward Gion-Shijo, Demachiyanagi, Fushimi Inari, Uji connections, and Keihan routes toward Osaka.
Station area
The area forms a natural link between Kyoto's east-side neighborhoods and the central city. Sanjo, the Kamo River, Pontocho, and Gion all influence the surrounding hotel market, while the subway makes cross-city travel easier than relying only on buses or taxis.
Good to know
Sanjo Keihan and Gion-Shijo serve different parts of the east-side river corridor. Sanjo Keihan is the better fit for hotels around Sanjo, Higashiyama, and northern Gion; Gion-Shijo is better for the Shijo, Pontocho, and Yasaka Shrine side of Gion.
