Overview
Choose Higashiyama Station when your plans are focused on Kyoto's east side rather than long-distance rail travel. This Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line stop serves Kyoto-Higashiyama and Okazaki, including Heian-jingu, the Okazaki museum district, canal-side walks, Nanzen-ji, and the northern side of the Higashiyama area.
Unlike Kyoto Station, Higashiyama is not a major intercity rail hub. Its value is local: it works well once you are already in Kyoto, especially for sightseeing days built around Okazaki, museums, shrines, and hotels on the east side.
Lines and connections
Higashiyama is station T10 on the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line, between Keage and Sanjo Keihan Station. Westbound trains continue toward Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae, Karasuma Oike, Nijo, and Uzumasa Tenjingawa. Eastbound trains run toward Keage, Yamashina, and Rokujizo.
To reach Kyoto Station, transfer at Karasuma Oike to the Karasuma Line. For Keihan rail services along Kyoto's east side and toward Osaka-side destinations, use nearby Sanjo Keihan.
