Overview
Choose Omiya Station when you are staying around Shijo-Omiya or Shijo-Horikawa and want direct Hankyu access across central Kyoto or toward Osaka. Located on the western side of the Kyoto Shijo-Karasuma corridor, it is often more convenient for nearby hotels than Shijo Station itself.
This is not Kyoto's main rail hub. Its strength is local convenience: Hankyu trains toward Kyoto Kawaramachi and Osaka-side routes, plus easy access to the Randen tram for the western side of the city.
Lines and connections
Omiya is station HK-84 on the Hankyu Kyoto Line. Trains run toward Kyoto Kawaramachi in one direction and Osaka Umeda in the other, giving travelers a private-rail route through downtown Kyoto and onward toward Osaka.
Randen's Shijo-Omiya tram stop is nearby. That connection is especially helpful for trips toward Arashiyama, offering a west-side route that differs from the subway and JR options.
Station area
The area around Omiya is more functional than scenic, with hotels, bus stops, local restaurants, and access to the Shijo corridor. It can work well for travelers who want to stay in central Kyoto without being directly in the busiest Kawaramachi or Kyoto Station districts.
Good to know
Use Omiya for Hankyu Kyoto Line trains and hotels around Shijo-Omiya. Choose Kyoto Station instead when Shinkansen travel, JR airport rail, long-distance buses, or the simplest luggage transfer matter most.
