Overview
Kyoto Kawaramachi Station is the Hankyu Kyoto Line terminal serving the Shijo Kawaramachi side of downtown Kyoto. It is the main Hankyu rail gateway for Kyoto-Kawaramachi, with exits near Shijo Kawaramachi, Kiyamachi, Takashimaya, Shinkyogoku, Teramachi, and riverside walking routes.
Lines and connections
The station is on the Hankyu Kyoto Line and is numbered HK86. Trains run toward Karasuma, Katsura, Takatsuki-shi, Juso, Osaka-umeda, and through to Tengachaya on the Osaka Metro Sakaisuji Line.
Keihan access is available nearby at Gion-Shijo Station across the Kamo River. For many visitors, Hankyu is the practical choice for Osaka-Umeda and central Osaka routes, while Keihan is useful for Kyoto's east side, Fushimi Inari, and Osaka routes on the Keihan network.
Station area
The station is underground beneath the Shijo Kawaramachi area, with exits serving the department-store and shopping core, as well as Kiyamachi and the Takasegawa side. The Kiyamachi North and Kiyamachi South entrances are especially convenient for hotels and restaurants along the Takasegawa side of the district.
Facilities include ticket gates, elevators, escalators, accessible toilets, coin lockers, an information counter, and the Hankyu Tourist Information Center at Kyoto-Kawaramachi.
Why use this station
Use Kyoto Kawaramachi Station for downtown Kyoto shopping and dining, Pontocho, Kiyamachi, Gion walks, or Hankyu rail access toward Osaka. Use Kyoto Station instead if you need the Shinkansen, JR lines, airport trains, or long-distance rail connections.
Good to know
Kyoto Kawaramachi Station is not Kyoto Station. It is the downtown Hankyu terminal, so travelers arriving by Shinkansen need to continue by taxi, bus, subway and rail transfer, or another planned connection.
