Overview
Three JR lines, airport buses, city services, and the shops and hotels of JR Oita City come together at Oita Station, the prefectural capital's main rail and bus hub. It is the natural starting point for exploring central Oita and traveling across the prefecture.
It isn't a Shinkansen stop. Travelers arriving from Honshu usually change at Kokura, then continue within Oita Prefecture by limited express, local train, or bus.
Lines and connections
The Nippo Main Line follows the coast. Sonic limited expresses run north through Beppu and Kokura toward Hakata, while other trains continue south along eastern Kyushu. For a straightforward rail trip between Oita and Beppu, this is the line to use.
The Kyudai Main Line turns inland toward Yufuin, Hita, and Kurume. The Hohi Main Line crosses toward Bungo-Taketa, Aso, and Kumamoto. Named trains operate on some inland routes, but schedules and through-service patterns vary, so check the day's departure rather than assuming every journey is direct.
Airport access
Oita Airport has no rail connection to the city. Airliner buses reach the city-center stops in about 60 minutes, although journey times depend on the service and road conditions.
These are scheduled public buses, not hotel shuttles. Check the current stop and timetable before an early flight, and leave extra time when roads are busy.
Station area
The Oita Station Area is centered on JR Oita City. AMU Plaza provides shopping and dining, Bungo Niwasaki Market is beside the concourse, and City Rooftop Place occupies the roof. Coin lockers, a ticket office, and rail-pass services cover the essentials during a longer connection.
For central Oita, use the Funai Chuo Exit, also signed as the North Exit. JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Oita connects directly to the complex, with its entrance immediately outside this side of the station.
What's nearby
The Oita Prefectural Art Museum and Funai Castle ruins are each about a 15-minute walk from the station. Shopping arcades and city-center restaurants line the streets between them, giving travelers several options without another train ride.
Umitamago aquarium and Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden are farther west along the coast toward Beppu. Buses from the station reach the area in under 30 minutes, but neither attraction is part of the walkable center.
Good to know
Oita Station and Beppu Station serve different kinds of city stay. Oita is better placed for the prefectural capital, its museums, airport buses, and three-line rail network; Beppu is the more direct choice when central hot-spring districts are the main reason for visiting. For Shinkansen travel, plan to transfer at Kokura.
