Overview
The station building is part of the sightseeing. Dating from 1914, Mojiko Station stands beside Mojiko Retro, where historic port buildings, museums, restaurants, and the Kanmon Strait waterfront begin just outside its doors.
As the terminus of JR Kyushu's Kagoshima Main Line, it's the rail stop for the old port district. Kokura remains the larger transfer point for Shinkansen services and airport travel.
Station background
The nationally protected Renaissance-style building is recognized for its cultural importance. Its architecture belongs naturally to the wider port district, so arriving by train becomes the first part of a Mojiko visit.
Inside, you'll find a tourist information center, ticketing facilities, and coin lockers. These basics help if you're stopping for a few hours before continuing elsewhere.
Lines and connections
Mojiko is the northern terminus of the JR Kagoshima Main Line. Local trains reach Kokura in about 15 minutes, where passengers can change for the Sanyo Shinkansen, other JR lines, airport buses, and the Kitakyushu Monorail.
From Hakata, the faster route combines the Shinkansen to Kokura with a local train to Mojiko. That journey takes about 40 minutes.
Airport access
There is no airport rail line at Mojiko Station. From Kitakyushu Airport, public transport requires an airport bus and JR service, while a car or taxi avoids the transfer. From Fukuoka Airport, take the subway to Hakata, continue to Kokura by Shinkansen, and change to a local train for Mojiko.
Neither route is door to door. If you're flying with heavy luggage on the same day, allow enough time for transfers at Kokura or Hakata.
Station area
The station opens directly onto the retro district. The Former Moji Mitsui Club, Kyushu Railway History Museum, Former Osaka Shosen Building, and waterfront are all nearby, with the Kanmon Ferry pier within the broader walking area.
BEB5 Mojiko by Hoshino Resorts is about four minutes away on foot. Facing the Kanmon Strait, the hotel gives visitors the option of staying after the daytime sightseeing crowds have gone.
What's nearby
Mojiko Retro Observation Room provides a high view over the port and strait, while Blue Wing Moji crosses the inner harbour. Baked-curry restaurants and cafes line the streets between the station, historic buildings, and waterfront.
Beyond the district, the Kanmon Ferry reaches Karato in Shimonoseki in about five minutes. The seasonal Shiokaze-go trolley provides another route toward Mekari and the pedestrian tunnel side of the strait.
Good to know
Don't confuse Mojiko Station with Moji Station. Mojiko is the terminus beside the historic port, while Moji is a separate station farther south. For Shinkansen travel, change at Kokura rather than expecting bullet trains at Mojiko.
