Overview
Beneath the Muromachi side of Tokyo-Nihonbashi, Mitsukoshimae Station serves the Tokyo Metro Ginza and Hanzomon lines. Underground passages connect the station with department stores, shopping complexes, offices, and hotels, which is especially helpful in bad weather or when you're carrying luggage.
The connected JR station has a different name: Shin-Nihombashi. Follow the transfer signs for the Sobu Rapid Line rather than assuming its platforms are part of the Metro station.
Lines and connections
The Ginza Line serves Mitsukoshimae as G12. Trains run toward Ginza and Shibuya in one direction, and Ueno and Asakusa in the other. For many first-time Tokyo itineraries, it is the more versatile of the station's two subway lines.
The Hanzomon Line serves the station as Z09. Westbound trains run through Otemachi, Nagatacho, Aoyama-itchome, and Shibuya, while eastbound trains continue toward Oshiage, with through services beyond the Tokyo Metro network. At JR Shin-Nihombashi, Sobu Rapid Line trains run toward Tokyo and Shinagawa or toward Chiba.
Station area
Exits A7 and A8 serve Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower, Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo, and the Mitsui Memorial Museum. Exit A6 leads to Coredo Muromachi 1 and 2, TOHO Cinemas Nihonbashi, and Fukutoku Shrine. Mitsukoshi has several nearby entrances, including A2, A3, and A5.
The underground layout stretches across two Metro lines, several commercial buildings, and the connected JR station. Choose your exit before leaving the platform area. A wrong turn can add an unnecessary walk at street level.
What's nearby
Nihombashi Mitsukoshi Main Store stands above the station, while Coredo Muromachi occupies several nearby buildings. The Mitsui Memorial Museum is housed in the historic Mitsui Main Building, and Fukutoku Shrine stands among the newer commercial blocks.
Nihonbashi Bridge and the Bank of Japan are also within walking distance. The bridge side leads toward river cruises and Nihombashi Station, while the western passages continue toward Otemachi and Tokyo Station.
Good to know
The names can be confusing. Mitsukoshimae and Nihombashi are separate stations: Mitsukoshimae is closer to the Muromachi blocks, Mitsukoshi, Coredo Muromachi, and Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo, while Nihombashi Station is farther south near Takashimaya and the bridge.
Elevator routes differ by line. For the Ginza Line, the surface elevator beside A7 operates from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and A5 provides another elevator route. For the Hanzomon Line, use the elevator at B4. Check current station notices if step-free access is essential.
