Overview

THE GATE HOTEL Kyoto Takasegawa by HULIC is located in Kyoto-Kawaramachi, on the Takasegawa and Shijo Kawaramachi side of central Kyoto. It works well for travelers who want easy access to downtown restaurants, Pontocho, Kamo River walks, Gion, and rail connections from Kyoto Kawaramachi Station and Gion-Shijo Station.

Rooms

The hotel has 184 rooms split between the Main building and the renovated Schoolhouse building. The Main building offers 164 rooms with a contemporary Kyoto-inspired design, while the Schoolhouse building has 20 rooms in the former Rissei Elementary School, a 1920s structure incorporated into the property. Room types range from Study rooms suited to solo travelers to larger THE GATE, Suite, Grace, and Connect layouts, with published sizes from 21 to 66 square meters and space for up to four guests in selected rooms.

Facilities

Facilities include a third-floor Premium Lounge and fitness area, an eighth-floor restaurant and lobby lounge, and a guest-only Lounge & Patio with books curated by the Rissei Library. The patio is a comfortable place to relax in the evening, and the hotel’s design gives it a stronger sense of place than a typical station-area city hotel.

Dining

Dining centers on Anchor Kyoto, an eighth-floor bistro restaurant with views toward Higashiyama. The same floor also has the Lobby Lounge & Bar, while the third floor is home to the guest-only Lounge & Patio. Breakfast is served at Anchor Kyoto in a choice-based format rather than a simple grab-and-go style.

Location and transport

Kyoto Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line is about three minutes on foot from the Kiyamachi North Exit. Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Main Line is about five minutes on foot from Exit 4. From Kyoto Station, the hotel is usually reached by taxi or with a transfer, rather than as a direct station-front stay.

Airport access

Airport access is typically planned through Kyoto Station, central Kyoto rail transfers, airport buses, or taxis, depending on luggage and arrival time. Taxi travel is roughly 60 minutes from Osaka International Airport and roughly 90 minutes from Kansai International Airport, although travel times vary with traffic.

Why stay here

Choose THE GATE HOTEL Kyoto Takasegawa by HULIC if your trip centers on downtown Kyoto, evenings in Gion, Pontocho, Kawaramachi shopping, and a more polished setting than a basic rail-side hotel. It is especially useful for travelers who want both Hankyu and Keihan access nearby, along with a distinctive Schoolhouse component, guest lounges, and on-site dining.

Good to know

This is not a Kyoto Station hotel, so Shinkansen arrivals usually require a taxi, bus, rail transfer, or another onward route. The hotel does not have its own parking, and public transportation is the better fit for most stays.
