Overview
For events at Makuhari Messe, outlet shopping, bayfront hotels, or baseball at ZOZO Marine Stadium, Kaihimmakuhari Station is the main JR stop. It anchors the Kaihimmakuhari Station Area, where conventions and other large events can quickly fill the concourse and surrounding pedestrian decks.
The station is JE14 on the JR Keiyo Line. It isn't a Shinkansen stop, and it shouldn't be confused with the older Makuhari stations farther inland.
Station background
Kaihimmakuhari Station opened in 1986 as Makuhari New City developed on reclaimed land. Its role expanded alongside Makuhari Messe, office towers, hotels, shopping centers, and the waterfront stadium.
The Central Gate handles the main passenger flow. The newer Park Gate provides another route to the north side of the district, but its published hours are shorter and it has no stationed staff.
Lines and connections
Inbound Keiyo Line trains run toward Maihama, Shin-Kiba, and Tokyo. Faster services reach Tokyo Station in about 30 minutes, although the journey varies with the stopping pattern. Some Musashino Line through trains also call here before continuing toward Nishi-Funabashi and Fuchuhommachi.
Outbound trains continue toward Soga, where passengers can change for the Uchibo and Sotobo lines. There is no direct rail link to Chiba Station. Depending on the destination, common routes involve changing at Soga or taking a bus through Makuharihongo.
Airport access
Paid airport limousine buses connect the wider station and hotel district with Haneda and Narita airports. Hotel New Otani Makuhari is among the hotels with scheduled airport-bus stops at its entrance.
These are road services, not direct airport trains. Stops and calling patterns vary, so check whether your coach serves the station bus area, a particular hotel, or both. Road traffic can also affect journey times.
Station area
Mitsui Outlet Park Makuhari is immediately outside the south side of the station, while nearby Plena Makuhari has restaurants and everyday services. Broad pedestrian routes continue beyond these shopping blocks toward the convention hotels and Makuhari Messe.
Hotels using Makuhari in their names can be very different distances from the station. Check the stated walk and the correct exit, especially if you're carrying luggage or leaving after a large event.
What's nearby
Makuhari Messe is about five minutes away on foot, depending on the hall and route. ZOZO Marine Stadium is about a 15-minute walk from the station. Mihama-en Japanese Garden and Makuhari Seaside Park offer quieter bayfront stops between the hotel district and the waterfront.
Crowds can build quickly after conventions, concerts, and baseball games. Buying your onward ticket or adding value to an IC card before the return rush can make departure easier.
Good to know
Don't confuse Kaihimmakuhari with JR Makuhari, Keisei Makuhari, or Makuharihongo. They serve different rail lines and aren't interchangeable on foot.
The Park Gate is unstaffed and closes earlier than the Central Gate. Outside its published hours, use the Central Gate.
