Overview
At Iseshi Station, a rail arrival becomes the start of Ise's shrine route. JR Central and Kintetsu share the station, while the JR-side gate faces the torii and direct approach through Iseshi Station and Geku.
For a first visit, the route is easy to grasp. Geku is about five minutes away on foot, tourist assistance and baggage services are beside the gate, and buses continue toward Naiku.
Lines and connections
JR Central serves Iseshi on the Sangu Line. Eastbound trains provide the clearest rail route to Futaminoura and Toba, while westbound services run through Taki into the wider JR network in Mie. JR is especially helpful when you're combining a shrine visit with the coast.
Kintetsu's Yamada Line handles most long-distance arrivals. Limited express trains link Ise with Nagoya, Kyoto, and Osaka, with onward services running through Ujiyamada toward Toba and Shima. Ujiyamada is only one short rail stop away, so the two stations often appear together in Ise itineraries.
The operators have separate gates and tickets, although their platforms are connected within the station. If you arrive on Kintetsu, follow the overpass toward the JR-side gate for Geku or the hotel district south of the tracks.
Airport access
Travel from Chubu Centrair International Airport requires a transfer in Nagoya rather than a direct train. Take Meitetsu to Meitetsu Nagoya, walk to Kintetsu Nagoya, then continue by Kintetsu limited express to Iseshi.
The transfer is straightforward if you allow enough time, but the two operators don't share platforms in Nagoya. Plan for the walk between stations and separate tickets, especially when carrying luggage.
Station area
The Iseshi Station Tourist Information Center is inside the JR-side gate, with English support, maps, and bus information. A separate baggage facility beside the station accepts luggage and can arrange same-day delivery to some accommodation in Ise-Shima when items are dropped off early enough.
Comfort Hotel ERA Ise is about three minutes from this side of the station. Geku-sando begins across the road, keeping check-in, meals, a shrine visit, and departure within the same compact area.
What's nearby
Geku is the closest major sight, reached along the direct approach from the station square. Naiku, Oharaimachi, and Okage Yokocho require a bus ride. For Futami and Meoto Iwa, take JR to Futaminoura, then continue on foot or by other local transport.
The city is spread out. Iseshi Station provides a clear starting point, but it doesn't put every part of Ise within walking distance.
Good to know
Use the JR-side gate for Geku, the tourist information center, the baggage counter, and Comfort Hotel ERA Ise. When arriving on Kintetsu, don't automatically leave through the nearer Kintetsu-side gate. Follow the signs across the overpass if your destination is south of the tracks.
