Overview
On Aoyama-dori, Gaiemmae Station is a compact Tokyo Metro stop serving eastern Tokyo-Omotesando / Aoyama and the Meiji Jingu Gaien side of the neighborhood. It is station G03 on the Ginza Line, one stop from Omote-sando and one from Aoyama-itchome.
Hotels, offices, shops, restaurants, and sports venues spread across Kita-Aoyama and Minami-Aoyama. Gaiemmae doesn't offer the multiple lines available at its neighboring stations, but its single route crosses a broad stretch of central Tokyo without requiring a transfer.
Lines and connections
Westbound Ginza Line trains run directly to Shibuya. In the other direction, trains cross central Tokyo through Ginza and Ueno before reaching Asakusa, allowing a day divided between Aoyama and central or eastern Tokyo without changing trains.
There are no other lines at Gaiemmae. Omote-sando, one stop toward Shibuya, adds the Hanzomon and Chiyoda lines. Aoyama-itchome, one stop in the opposite direction, adds the Hanzomon and Toei Oedo lines. Use either neighboring station when its additional lines avoid a longer transfer elsewhere.
Station area
Aoyama-dori runs above the station, with Minami-Aoyama to the south and Kita-Aoyama to the north. Exit 1a provides the hotel-side approach to Tokyu Stay Aoyama Premier, about two minutes away on foot. Other exits lead toward Meiji Jingu Gaien and the sports facilities northeast of the station.
The compact station can be simpler to navigate than Omote-sando when Gaiemmae is genuinely the closest stop. That advantage disappears when your destination is farther west along Omotesando or near another subway line, so match the exit to the exact address before arriving.
What's nearby
Meiji Jingu Gaien lies north of the station, with tree-lined walks and several major sports venues. Aoyama's restaurants, boutiques, galleries, and offices are also nearby, along with the Passage Aoyama complex.
Omotesando's main shopping avenue and Harajuku are farther west but remain within the wider walkable area. For Nezu Museum or the middle of Omotesando, Omote-sando Station may shorten the walk.
Good to know
Gaiemmae has no JR service, airport train, or Shinkansen connection. Airport and intercity journeys require a transfer, while Tokyo Station and Shinagawa are reached through the wider subway and JR network.
Tokyo Metro's official English spelling is Gaiemmae. Some English-language hotel and travel pages use Gaienmae, but both spellings refer to station G03.
