Description

Overview

Odawara is a castle town in western Kanagawa Prefecture, set between the Tokyo metropolitan area and the mountains of Hakone. It is compact enough for a short stop, but its rail connections also make it a convenient overnight choice for trips linking Tokyo, Hakone, and western Japan.

Odawara Station is the city's main anchor. Shinkansen, JR, Odakyu, Hakone Tozan, and Daiyuzan services all meet there, while the castle and old town are on the east side of the tracks.

What the city is known for

Odawara Castle is the city's signature landmark. Its reconstructed keep looks out toward Sagami Bay, and the surrounding park preserves gates, stonework, seasonal flowers, and traces of the old castle town. The castle is about a ten-minute walk from the station.

Food is another strong part of Odawara's identity. Kamaboko fish cakes, Odawara oden, dried fish, local seafood, and preserved plums all reflect the city's ties to Sagami Bay and the historic Tokaido route.

Main areas

The Odawara Station Area is the easiest place to stay when train timing, luggage, or a Hakone connection is a priority. Minaka Odawara and the streets leading toward the castle add restaurants, shops, and everyday city-center services within walking distance of the platforms.

The castle and old Tokaido side are better for history and relaxed town walks. Hayakawa, farther south, is the area to consider for the fishing port and seafood, though it requires a separate local train ride or road transfer from central Odawara.

Getting around and onward travel

The Tokaido Shinkansen gives Odawara a fast link to Tokyo and stations farther west. JR Tokaido and Shonan-Shinjuku services handle regional travel, Odakyu trains connect with Shinjuku, and Hakone Tozan trains and buses continue toward Hakone-Yumoto and the wider Hakone area.

That makes the city more than a place to change trains. You can stop for the castle and lunch, stay overnight before an early departure, or use Odawara as the point where a Shinkansen journey shifts into a slower stay in Hakone.

Where to stay and where to go next

Stay near the station for the simplest access to Shinkansen, JR, Odakyu, and Hakone services. Continue into Hakone if the trip is focused on mountain scenery, museums, Lake Ashi, or a longer hot-spring stay. Odawara works well for travelers who want castle-town history, local food, and flexible rail access in the same stop.

Good to know

Odawara Station has distinct east and west sides. The castle, Minaka Odawara, and most city-center sightseeing are east of the tracks, while the Shinkansen gate is on the west side. Allow a little extra time to cross the station when moving between a hotel, local trains, and the bullet train.
