Overview
Kyoto Railway Museum is about two minutes on foot from Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station, while Kyoto Aquarium is about seven minutes away in Kyoto-Umekoji. The JR Sagano Line reaches the station from Kyoto Station in about three minutes. Only a short walk remains to either attraction.
This is the local stop for Umekoji Park, not a general Kyoto interchange. It simplifies a day at the park and its attractions. Transfers to the Shinkansen, subway, Kintetsu, and airport trains remain at Kyoto Station.
Station background
JR West opened Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station on March 16, 2019, between Kyoto and Tambaguchi. Before then, the railway museum was about a 20-minute walk from Kyoto Station and the aquarium about 15 minutes away. The new stop reduced that approach to a three-minute train ride followed by a brief walk through the park area.
Lines and connections
Umekoji-Kyotonishi is served by the JR Sagano Line. Platform 1 handles trains to Kyoto, while platform 2 serves trains toward Saga-Arashiyama, Sonobe, and Fukuchiyama. Continue west for Saga-Arashiyama if both areas are on the same day's itinerary.
Kyoto Station is one stop east. Transfer there for the Shinkansen and the city's wider JR, subway, and Kintetsu networks. If you have a timed long-distance departure, allow for this local train leg rather than treating Umekoji as part of the main station complex.
Station area
The station has one gate and two platforms. Elevators and escalators provide step-free access to both platforms, and an accessible restroom is inside the gates. Coin lockers are available too.
The concourse opens beside Umekoji Park, close to the railway museum entrance. The park-side setting feels much less hectic than the area around Kyoto Station, but the tradeoff is a smaller local station without a broad range of transfers.
What's nearby
Kyoto Railway Museum is the closest major attraction. Kyoto Aquarium lies farther east across the park, and the broad lawns between them offer a place to pause between museum and aquarium visits.
Umekoji Potel KYOTO is beside the aquarium and about five minutes from the station. Staying there keeps the park and both attractions close, with Kyoto Station still only one local train stop away.
Good to know
This isn't a station for citywide transfers. If you're coming from a hotel near Kyoto Station solely for the museum or aquarium, the short JR ride removes most of the walk. Travelers staying in Umekoji should allow for the extra local train before a Shinkansen departure, an airport train, or another connection from Kyoto Station.
