Overview
Osaka's palace ruins and the museum that explains their history are both close to Tanimachi 4-chome Station. This Osaka Metro interchange serves the southwest side of the Osaka Castle Area, allowing you to visit the museum before walking through Otemon Gate toward the castle tower.
Morinomiya Station, one stop east on the Chuo Line, serves the park's southeast corner and connects with the JR Osaka Loop Line. Tanimachi 4-chome is closer to the history museum and the northern section of the palace site.
Lines and connections
Tanimachi 4-chome is T23 on the Tanimachi Line and C18 on the Chuo Line. Tanimachi Line trains run directly to Higashi-Umeda for the Umeda district and south to Tennoji. For a castle visit from Umeda, start at Higashi-Umeda rather than the Midosuji Line's separate Umeda stop.
Westbound Chuo Line trains reach Hommachi Station, where you can change to the Midosuji Line. From Shin-Osaka Station, take the Midosuji Line to Hommachi and change to an eastbound Chuo Line train. From Namba, take the Midosuji Line to Hommachi and make the same change.
Chuo Line trains also run directly to Osakako for the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan area. You can travel from the castle area to the bay without changing trains.
Airport access
From Kansai International Airport, take a JR train to Tennoji and change to the Tanimachi Line for Tanimachi 4-chome. Allow time to walk from the JR platforms to the subway at Tennoji.
Station area
Exits 2 and 9 are close to the Osaka Museum of History. For the castle, Exit 1-B provides an approach from the Tanimachi Line side, while Exit 9 is another option from the Chuo Line side.
Osaka Castle Park is about six minutes on foot from Exit 1-A. That's the park entrance, not the tower. From here, the route continues through Otemon Gate and toward Sakuramon Gate before reaching the main tower, so allow time for the walk through the grounds.
What's nearby
Inside the Osaka Museum of History, life-size reconstructions and models explain the city's past. The tenth-floor galleries recreate part of Naniwa Palace's ancient audience hall, while views along the exhibition route overlook the palace site and Osaka Castle. The highlights take about an hour. The museum normally closes on Tuesdays, or on Wednesday when Tuesday is a public holiday.
Naniwa Palace Ruins Park preserves the sites of seventh- and eighth-century palaces, with ground markings showing where buildings and corridors once stood. In the northern section, Nano Niwa has cafes, a bakery, and restaurants beside the lawn, plus terrace seating overlooking the park. It's about a minute from Exit 9, so you can have lunch here before continuing to the castle.
Patina Osaka is about an eight-minute walk from the station. Guests can use either subway line for trips across the city, with the museum and palace park nearby.
Good to know
If you're heading to the castle with luggage or a stroller, use the elevator at Exit 1-A from the Tanimachi Line or Exit 11 from the Chuo Line. These are separate from the stair exits, so follow the elevator signs before leaving the station.
