Overview
The JR gates open directly into Takanawa Gateway City, the mixed-use district that held its grand opening in March 2026. NEWoMan Takanawa provides shopping and dining beside the station, while the wider development includes MoN Takanawa, a convention center, and JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo.
Takanawa Gateway is the closest JR stop for hotels, meetings, and events within the development. Shinagawa Station is one stop south, or roughly a 20-minute walk from its Takanawa Exit. It remains the better connection for the Tokaido Shinkansen, Keikyu trains, and broader long-distance travel.
Station background
Takanawa Gateway opened in 2020 as the Yamanote Line's first new station in 49 years. It became fully operational when the wider district held its grand opening on March 28, 2026.
Lines and connections
Yamanote Line trains run toward Shinagawa and Shibuya in one direction, and Tokyo and Ueno in the other. The Keihin-Tohoku Line follows the same central corridor, continuing north through Tokyo and south through Shinagawa toward Kamata.
Tokyo Station is about eight minutes away on the Keihin-Tohoku Line, while the Yamanote Line reaches Shibuya in about 14 minutes. Between them, the two routes cover most cross-city trips without a transfer.
Sengakuji Station is separate but about a two-minute walk from the complex. Keikyu and Toei Asakusa Line services from there add connections toward Haneda Airport and along the Asakusa Line corridor.
Airport access
No airport train stops at Takanawa Gateway. From Haneda Airport Terminal 3, the Keikyu Airport Express reaches Sengakuji in about 15 minutes, followed by the short walk into Takanawa Gateway City. From Terminals 1 and 2, an alternative route takes Keikyu to Shinagawa and transfers to JR, with a total journey of about 17 minutes.
A daily airport limousine bus connects Narita Airport with Takanawa Gateway Station and JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo. It departs from platform 2 in the first-floor traffic plaza, so you'll want to check the current timetable before matching the service to a flight.

Takanawa Gateway City is a modern mixed-use district rather than a traditional sightseeing neighborhood. NEWoMan Takanawa accounts for much of the shopping and dining, while MoN Takanawa and the convention center host exhibitions, performances, meetings, and events.
Pedestrian decks connect the station side with the district's main venues. The compact layout is most valuable when your hotel, meeting, or evening plans are already here: you can arrive by JR and spend much of the day without another cross-city trip.
