Overview
Nijo Station works in two directions at once. The JR Sagano Line links it with Kyoto Station and the Arashiyama side of the city, while the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line runs east-west across central Kyoto. That combination gives this modest interchange an unusually broad role.
The station anchors Nijo Station Area in western-central Kyoto. It's also a convenient hotel stop, particularly for Moxy Kyoto, which is about three minutes away on foot.
Lines and connections
JR Nijo is E04 on the Sagano Line, the local name for this section of the San-in Main Line. The ride from Kyoto Station takes about six minutes, and all Sagano Line trains shown for this route stop here. Westbound services continue through Enmachi toward Saga-Arashiyama, Kameoka, and Sonobe.
The subway station is T15 on the Tozai Line. Eastbound trains serve Nijojo-mae, Karasuma Oike Station, Sanjo Keihan, Higashiyama, and destinations toward Yamashina. Change at Karasuma Oike for the Karasuma Line. Westbound trains continue to Nishioji Oike and Uzumasa Tenjingawa.
Airport access
Reaching Nijo by rail from either Kansai International Airport or Osaka Itami Airport requires a transfer. From Kansai Airport, the JR Haruka runs directly to Kyoto Station, where travelers can change to the Sagano Line for the roughly six-minute ride to Nijo. Kansai Airport limousine buses also serve Kyoto Station.
From Itami Airport, limousine buses take about 50 minutes to Kyoto Station, though traffic can cause delays. Continue from there by JR to Nijo. These routes don't continue to a hotel door, so allow time for the transfer and final walk.
Station area
The JR and subway stops share the same immediate station area. The JR station's East Gate serves the hotel side and the walking route toward Nijo Castle. Restaurants, shops, and everyday services line the approaches, but this is a smaller interchange rather than a large rail and commercial complex.
What's nearby
Nijo Castle is the main sightseeing draw. The walk from the East Gate takes about 17 minutes along a signed route toward the moat. The Sagano Line also provides a direct ride from Nijo toward Saga-Arashiyama.
Good to know
Nijo isn't the closest subway stop to Nijo Castle. Nijojo-mae, one stop east on the Tozai Line, opens beside the castle moat and is the better option when minimizing the walk matters. Nijo is more useful when the JR connection to Kyoto Station or Saga-Arashiyama is part of the plan.
