Overview
Niigata Station is the northern terminus of the Joetsu Shinkansen and the main rail hub for Niigata City. The Niigata Station Area contains the Shinkansen and conventional platforms, airport and local buses, CoCoLo shopping, and station-linked hotels.
An elevated concourse connects the Bandai and south sides of the tracks. The bus terminal is beneath the station, placing road and rail services in the same complex.
Lines and connections
Joetsu Shinkansen trains run south through Nagaoka, Echigo-Yuzawa, and Takasaki to Tokyo. The fastest trips take about 110 minutes, although stopping patterns and journey times vary by service.
The Shinetsu Main Line runs toward Niitsu and Nagaoka. The Echigo Line serves western Niigata and continues toward Yoshida and Kashiwazaki. The Hakushin Line heads east toward Shibata. These routes cover local and regional travel beyond the Shinkansen corridor.
Airport access
Direct limousine buses run between Niigata Airport and the station in about 25 minutes. Local airport buses take longer because they make additional stops.
There is no rail link between the airport and central Niigata. Use the station bus terminal for the public-transport transfer, and allow extra time during heavy traffic or winter weather.
Station area
CoCoLo Niigata contains restaurants, local-food shops, cafes, convenience stores, and other services. The Bandai Exit faces central Niigata and the route toward the Shinano River. The South Exit serves the southern business district and road connections.
JR-East Hotel Mets Niigata is directly linked to the west connecting passage and takes about one minute to reach on foot. The route remains inside the station complex until the hotel entrance.
What's nearby
Bandai Bridge is about 15 minutes on foot from the Bandai Exit. Cross it to continue toward Furumachi, or take a city bus to the port, Toki Messe, Minatopia, or Niigata City Aquarium Marinepia Nihonkai.
The station shops sell quick meals and local products for a journey. More restaurants and larger commercial blocks begin along the route through Bandai.
Good to know
Shinkansen and conventional trains use separate platform groups within the same station. Allow enough time to move between them when carrying luggage.
Airport buses stop at the station rather than individual hotels. For JR-East Hotel Mets Niigata, follow signs to the west connecting passage instead of leaving through the Bandai or South Exit.
