Overview
Beneath Nihon Odori, Japan's first Western-style street, Nihon-odori Station serves Yokohama's civic quarter between Kannai and the waterfront. Osanbashi is a seven-minute walk from Exits 3 or 4.
It's mainly a final approach rather than a transfer point. The historic avenue, prefectural offices, and pier all lie within the same compact district.
Lines and connections
Nihon-odori is MM05 on the Minatomirai Line, between Bashamichi and Motomachi-Chukagai. Westbound trains run to Yokohama Station, and many continue along the Tokyu Toyoko Line corridor toward Shibuya and Ikebukuro. Eastbound, Motomachi-Chukagai is one stop away.
Change at Yokohama for JR, Keikyu, and other city or regional lines. Through services can keep a Tokyo-side journey on one train, but airport and Shinkansen trips still require another connection.
Station area
The station's official subtitle is Kencho-Osanbashi, a concise description of the area above ground: government offices on the inland side and the passenger pier toward the bay. Nihon Odori was completed in 1870, and historic facades such as the Kanagawa Prefectural Government building and Yokohama Archives of History still line the avenue.
These streets form the port-facing side of Yokohama-Kannai. Come here for civic architecture and waterfront walks rather than the department-store convenience around Yokohama Station.
What's nearby
Osanbashi is the clearest destination from the station. The cruise pier's rooftop overlooks the harbor, while waterfront routes continue toward the Red Brick Warehouse in one direction and Yamashita Park in the other. For Chinatown, Motomachi-Chukagai is usually the better arrival point, one stop farther east.
Good to know
Nihon-odori Station and Kannai Station serve different sides of the same central district. Kannai handles JR and the Blue Line and is closer to Yokohama Stadium; Nihon-odori puts the historic avenue and Osanbashi nearer.
Official access directions place Osanbashi seven minutes on foot from Nihon-odori, compared with 15 minutes from Kannai. If you're carrying cruise luggage, use Exit 3 or 4 and allow for the street-level walk to the pier.
