Overview
The handoff from JR's Ito Line to the Izukyu Line takes place at Ito Station on the eastern Izu Peninsula. For visitors, the station has two roles: it is the arrival point for central Ito's hot springs and beach, and the junction for journeys south toward Izu-Kogen, Kawazu, and Shimoda.
The Ito Station Area begins outside the gates. Orange Beach, Tokaikan, Matsukawa, restaurants, and central hotels are all within walking distance, while buses serve sights beyond the compact center.
Lines and connections
Northbound JR Ito Line trains run to Atami, the main interchange for the Tokaido Shinkansen and the wider Tokaido corridor. Passengers arriving by bullet train usually change there before continuing to Ito. Some local services run beyond Atami, depending on the timetable.
From Ito, the Izukyu Line follows the coast south through Izu-Kogen, Izu-Atagawa, Izu-Inatori, and Kawazu before reaching Izukyu-Shimoda. It's the clearest public transport route for a multi-stop journey down eastern Izu.
Limited Express Odoriko trains connect the Tokyo area with Ito and stations farther south on selected departures. These trains use the same coastal route, but reserved seating and stopping patterns vary by service. Check the exact departure before relying on a one-seat ride.
Station area
The tourist information center is outside the ticket gates. International visitors can also exchange an eligible Izukyu Discovery Pass there. Local buses leave from the station forecourt, and the streets beyond lead directly into central Ito rather than an enclosed station complex.
Laforet Ito Onsen Yunoniwa is about eight minutes away on foot. The route is outdoors, but the short walk keeps an onsen stay close to the railway without requiring a hotel shuttle.
What's nearby
Orange Beach is about five minutes away, so the shore is easy to include on an arrival or departure day. Tokaikan is about seven minutes from the station, while the Matsukawa promenade is within roughly ten minutes. Together, these places form a central walking circuit through Ito's old onsen streets, riverside, and coast.
The city's wider landscapes aren't beside the station. Reaching Mount Omuro or the Jogasaki Coast requires onward travel by rail, bus, taxi, or car, often with Izu-Kogen as the next transport point.
Good to know
Ito is not a Shinkansen station. If you're arriving by bullet train, change at Atami and check whether your Tokyo-area service is a through Odoriko or requires a transfer. For journeys farther south, confirm whether your local train continues to the chosen destination or requires another change.
