Overview
Downtown Matsumoto spreads east from the tracks. Around Matsumoto Station, trains, buses, and hotels cluster near two main exits: the Castle Exit faces the city center, while the Alps Exit opens to the west.
Matsumoto Castle is about 15 minutes away on foot or around 10 minutes by Town Sneaker bus. If you're arriving late, carrying heavy bags, or catching an early bus, staying near the station saves an extra trip across town.
The Castle Exit side
The Castle Exit, also signed as the East Exit, is the side most visitors use. Town Sneaker buses leave the station forecourt for Matsumoto Castle and the city museum, while the streets ahead continue toward downtown shops, restaurants, and the older castle-town districts.
Matsumoto Bus Terminal is separate from the station forecourt, although it's only about two minutes away on foot. Mountain and highway buses use the bus terminal, so check your departure point rather than assuming every service leaves directly outside the rail gates.
Trains and buses
Limited Express Azusa trains run directly between Matsumoto and Shinjuku, while Limited Express Shinano trains connect with Nagoya. It isn't a Shinkansen stop. Travelers arriving from Kyoto or Osaka by bullet train normally change at Nagoya before continuing on the Shinano.
Kamikochi requires a little more planning. The most frequent public transport route takes the Alpico Kamikochi Line from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima, followed by a reserved bus into Kamikochi. A limited number of direct buses also leave Matsumoto Bus Terminal during the operating season, and reservations are required.
Shinshu Matsumoto Airport is around 30 minutes from the city by shuttle bus. The timetable matters more than the distance, especially before an early flight or with a tight rail connection.
Where it fits in a trip
The station area comes into its own before a mountain departure, after a late limited-express arrival, or whenever luggage makes repeated walks less appealing. Hotels on the Castle Exit side also keep the route into downtown directly ahead rather than across the tracks.
For a stay focused entirely on castle-town evenings, moving farther east brings more historic streets close to the hotel. Staying near the station trades some atmosphere for a shorter path to trains and buses the next morning.
